We just just got back from Chevellabration and everytime I pulled off to fill up with gas ($) I could push the clutch pedal in and it would have a little bit of noise. It is like a metal spinning on metal sound. If I let off of it a little bit it would quiet down, but when you fully press the clutch in all the way it would make that noise. It is also was louder going into reverse.

This is an original M-20 in a 67 SS. I have replaced the bearing a couple times just when we removed the engine and trans at different times. This one has had about 1800 miles on it. How do you check for a fork that is wore out as well? It has the original fork in it and the car has about 64,000 miles on it now.

Give the fork a visual inspection for wear and to see if it's bent. These things usually last a very long time unless something goes really wrong. 1800 miles for a release bearing isn't good! Are you sure you had some free play at the top of the pedal? Should be about 1" to 1-1/2". Also using the pedal as a foot rest on the freeway can wear out a bearing prematurely too. I use Hays or McLeod release bearings and they last the lifetime of the clutch.

When your talking about freeplay you are talking about from where your foot first touches the clutch pedal and it goes down about 1 1/2" and then the release bearing starts to move forward onto the pressure plate. Can you have too much free play?

Yes you can have too much free play, causing maybe hard shifting, not letting the clutch disengage

It is wierd though it makes more noise the farther you push on the pedal especially when clutch pedal is pushed to floor. Pluse it gets a little harder to shift gears while sitting still when it makes the noise. Going down the road it does not seem to have problem.
