I have a 69 stock chevelle 4-speed 396, with intermittent starter problems. If I attach a jumper to the S side of the starter and jump it to the pos batt post and starter works this should tell me the problem would be in the NSS, Ign. switch or wires in this group correct? If the starter does not work would the problem then be, Battery/cables/starter?
Just trying to find a place to start.
Also where does the power that goes to the ign. switch come from? Horn relay??
The battery is new and the starter was rebuilt about a month ago.
Thanks for your help

Yes, or even further back. When doing this test use a inline fuse close to the battery for safety. Also make DAM sure the shifter is in neutral as this bypasses all safety devices.

Yes the horn relay. Automotive electrical troubleshooting is one or a series of tests to find out what is giving you the problem, this one is the first step in troubleshooting starter problems.

Thanks for the info, now I can start at a point and move through this.
The info on this site is the best.

That's generally a good test but jumping it like that does not rule out the starter solenoid. I had one that I could jump start but the solenoid would still draw >30A continually. When I changed it I believe the new one was drawing about 7A. I just can't remember exactly but it was about 1/4 the current between the two.

The solenoid should draw maybe 30A till it kicks in then it draws the 7A of current while the starter motor is running. There are 2 coils in the solenoid and one is only used to pull-in the plunger.
