The worst part is the shot of novicane.
And that depends on the dentist and where the
cavity is. If it is in the front of the mouth, the shot stings
like a bee sting, but that only lasts for a couple seconds.
In the back of the mouth the gums are thicker and you may
not even feel it.
If he does not give you novicane, the cavitiy is not too deep, and
you will feel vibration from the drill, but not much else.

now, get a hold of yourself.
millions of people have had fillings and have
survived. ;)
I have a mouth full as well as caps and root cannals. Yee haaww!

Seriously, its nothing. Just try to ignore the sound of the drill. I even had 2 teeth pulled once, and that was nowhere near as bad as I thought.

your dentist might swab something in your mouth first, before the injection. this swab is flavored, and hopefully your dr. will ask what you prefer. last time my dentist used bubble gum flavor, made me gag for about ten minutes. anyway the swab will help deaden things before the injection. once this is all done, it's a piece of cake. your nerves will have worked you up to expect the worst, and it won't be much. if you don't have a dentist, that hangs on your jaw, it will be over before you know it....

Its gonna hurt like hell. Your going to smell your teeth burning, they're gonna stab you with needles (and it wont take the first time, either, they'll hit a nerve with the drill and have to shoot you up again and it feels like someone hooked a battery to your gums) and then you'll have a foul taste in your mouth the rest of the day, be slobbering on yourself, numb......

My advice is to slam your hand in your car door a few times before you go into the office. That way, you focus on the fact that your hand hurts like a hell and the dental work will be a cake walk.

He doesn't! Not only did the dentist miss with the damn novacane TWICE but he sat there the whole time talking with the assistant about all these OTHER times where he hit nerves etc. "Boy that one guy sure jumped up when I sliced into his tongue by accident", and stuff like that. Not to mention the times they accidently drill into the wrong tooth or worse yet PULL ONE OUT that isn't supposed to come out. I'd take Midnight Marauder's advice and better yet have a few shots of whiskey or better yet a little funny cigarette before you go in.

Oh, I'm just kidding.

or, not.

Don't worry about it, Novocaine is great stuff, and the best thing about it is that after you're done you can go to Wal-Mart and look like a drooling moron :D

Get an attractive woman dentist who has a very attractive female assistant. That's what I did :D . Then all you have to do is lay back and let the ladies goto work on you! Sometimes her top-end will cradle your head ;) . When you leave, you'll be thinking "damn, can't wait 'till my next appointment". I love getting fillings these days!

Tell the Dr. to stop drilling if the tooth starts smokeing, or if you hear squeaking noises. Than check to be sure he is drilling on the correct tooth. Don't worry about the odor from a tooth being drilled, no biggy, Keep your fat tongue out of the way, the drill goes thru it like butter....Good luck, and let us know how the Paramedics treated you .....

I actually just had several fillings done without the needle, gave in for one on the root canal and it was not painful at all. I can give a needle all day long but the sight of that thing coming near near is almost to much. A good dentist will cause you as little pain as possible, he wants you back afterall.

Yes, they rub your gums down with pain-killer first, wait a minute or three and shoot you up, easy-like so as to lessen the pain!!

I didn't like the smell of my hot/burning teeth as he tried to hurry but no big deal!!

I say this b/c I'm old enough to remember the slap of the belt that drove the old sloooooowwww, mechanical belt-drive drill of old!! (Sounded just like a Singer Sewing Machine treadle belt!!!!)....

THAT and the Horse-Doctor sized needles they used!!

To this day, I'd rather take a beating then go to a Dentist AND I have two I need pulled but juast can't work up my nerve to go... Not to mention my cavities that need redone...

I've been to bad dentists (so bad as a kid I didn't get my teeth worked on until I went in the Army and had to) and very good (don't feel a thing except for the first shot for a few seconds). You will know which kind you have when you are done. Hopefully you are going to someone that was recommended by someone that had a good experience. Good luck you will survive, half my mouth is filled and capped and I did.

You have absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Denistry has come a long way over the years. Novocaine will numb the area and you won't feel a thing. If the dentist is good, you won't feel a thing when he administers it.

Novocaine won't work to numb the area if there's an infection present. In a case like that, the dentist should give you an antibiotic to clear up the infection before proceeding with any work. This scenario is usually when someone has a toothache and their jaw is swollen due to the infection.

The worst is seeing that smoke rising up out of your mouth, I hate that part. Oh, and it smells worse than burning hair.

I've been to dentists all my life. I got a lot of fillings when I was a kid. The shots were always the part I hated worst.

As I got a little older, I quit getting so many cavities and had to visit the dentist less frequently.

When I had to go back as an adult, my family dentist had passed away and I had to find a new one. The guy was a friend of mine, and he did a fine job, but his assistant for some reason wanted to take a shoe-horn and peel my lip back around my ear so she could see my wisdom tooth.

Apparently she'd been hit before because before I could finish closing my fist for the jab, she was across the room.

I got a root canal once and this was with a dentist that a friend recommended. I stuck with him until I had to leave Baton Rouge. He let me watch the procedure with a hand mirror. I particularly liked when he used a tiny packing-puller to remove the nerve from the dead tooth.

I love getting my teeth cleaned, and the hygienists always comment on the fact that I'm not a baby about it. Few things feel better to me than walking out of the hygienists office with a set of clean choppers.

All BS aside, it all depends on the people who are working on you. I believe that people who are afraid of dentists had bad ones for their first experience.
