: Powerglide problems!!

My son and one of his friends ventured into putting a B & M shift kit into his powerglide. I helped him finish (clean up the mess in my garage) last night.

The car hesitates in reverse, and also goes backwards in drive. On blocks and in drive, it turns the wheels forward about half a turn before turning them backwards.

I know very little about trannys, however I thought there should have been little balls somwhere in there, and he said there were none.

We took the valve body back off, and the 1-2 valve assembly looked OK, so we put it back together, added oil, and had the same results.

Any thoughts!

Two things to look at. First is did you get the metal servo feed tube fully set into the bore in the case? Secondly, did you correctly align the pin in the 'rooster comb' shift linkage inside the trans with the corresponding groove at the front end of the manual valve; the one that slides in and out of the valve body to select each gear. Also make sure you used the correct gaskets on the valve body, and you are correct in that there are no checkballs in a Glide valve body. You may find two checkvalves that are spring-loaded though, for the rear pump in the earlier Glides.

The p-glide does not have any of the balls in the valve body. The one on my son's 68 took the gaskets from a 62-67 p-glide, instead of the 68+ gaskets. Changed them out, and all is well. Now it needs some hp for some more pop, and for better shifts.
