I have a 66 SS with what seems to be stock rear end suspension. I've replaced rear springs with stock raplacements. New shocks, Munroe sensatracks. I have P215/60/15 radial tires. 3:42 rear gears, Muncie M21 4speed. Car is street driven. Now for the problem. When I do want to play a little and do a burnout the rearend bounces very bad. Its bouncing so much that the tires are spinning but not leaving rubber on road. Any ideas on what is wrong. I really would like to smoke when I play. Thanks

Didn't anyone ever tell you smoking is bad for you.:D Sounds like you got some bad wheel hop.Do a search on wheel hop,you should see some causes and cures. You may need to make some rear susp upgrades to cure this.

you need new bushings, and boxed control arms, do a search though, there is so much on this you'll be reading for days

I'll do that. Thanks for info. Smoking is bad for you but we all experiment now don't we.

DO NOT stay into the gas when you experience wheel hop. You are putting a ton of shock on the entire drivetrain every time the tires catch and unload. Everything from the engine, transmission, driveshaft, U-joints, differential, axles, etc.

Even with your small 215s, it can do some serious damage very quickly.

Unfortunatly I think I have found that out. I have developed a vibration above 60mph. I thought it was tire balance but had them rebalanced and still the same. I rotated driveshaft 180 degrees and the vibration is a little less. since ujoints are new and ring and pinion are new I'm thinking driveshaft is bent or out of balance or something wrong with tailstock. Do you have any thoughts.

I'll be doing that search. I'll definetly stop smoking for this summer. It looks like I've just come up with my winter project for this coming winter. Thanks for the info. Don't hesitate to give me more. Wayne

Maybe some larger rear tires also. A 215 60 is a small rear tire. Try a 255 or 275.

Would you run 255's all the way around or just the rear? If just in the rear wouldn't that jack the backend of car up too much? right now I have one inch difference from bottom of rocker panel to floor in front of rear wheel and from rocker panel to floor just behind front wheel. I hope that makes sense. On another note, what about the vibration I mentioned in earlier post. Am I on the right track with possible damage I may have done. Thanks. You guys are a great help.

If you have 215's on it now all the way around that inch is from the suspension. I would stay away from 255 all the way around. Maybe 235 in front and 255 in rear. a 235 is 26' inches tall and a 255 is 27" inches tall. Rebuilt your entire rear suspension and box those arms. Do a search on this info.

I went from a 235 rear tire to a 275 rear tire. It helped ALOT. With the 235 tire I could rolling burnouts and it would not hook at all coming out of the hole. A 275 it spins alittle, but bites and goes.

Got the same problem (wheel hop) Not real bad. but bad enough. I've got boxed in arms on rubber bushings. Bushings look good,I think, hard to tell. There 3 years old. Was going to replace them with ploy, did the search on them.Wow, it was two days of reading.I think I'll stay with the rubber ones. Don't want to go to traction bars or anything like that. The only thing that looks weak are the shocks.(cheap set). Do you think a good set would fix the problem?
Tires are 245/60 and 295/50. Pur66,if I could do it over again I would have went back to the 235's in front.I think they look perfect on a 7'' rim.

Pinion angle is a major contributor to wheel hop.Bushings, worn mounting locations, bent or worn parts,wrong/worn springs can all throw the pinion angle out.I have some good springs for my car(taller) but can't/don't use them because they create a bad pinion angle resulting in horrible wheel hop.Damaged a driveshaft and u-joints with those springs.

Ok, looks like I will be redoing entire rear suspension, balance driveshaft and probably wouldn't hurt to put new tailstock on too while I'm at it, since I can't tell where vibration is coming from. Also looks like bigger tires in my future as well. Don as far as shocks go I'm not sure what to tell you. I have a brand new set of monroe sensatracks they give a beautiful ride but I still have wheel hop. So I would guess that shocks don't matter. Maybe someone else can better answer that for you. Thanks for all the info. Wayne
