: Paint before or after assembly?

I will soon be getting my Chevelle back from the bodyman who is now blocking the car. I will receive the cowl back in a few weeks and the fenders and hood a few weeks later. I am having the body work done by him and the paint by someone else. The man doing the body work thinks I should have it painted first and then hang the fenders but the idea sends a chill through me. I have built older cars and pickups and assembled them after painting but I always worry about possibly scratching the paint. What is the best approach to this?

i recommend priming the parts off the car at the same time paint the edges like inside the fenders and door jams put the parts on fit them then block out the primer mask and paint with the parts on the car
