: fixing minor scratches and chips
WestyJ69chevelle Oct 3rd, 04, 6:57 AM I have finally finished assemling my 69 now! but in the process I gave her a few nasty chips on the back of the front fenders where the door meets it. as well as a few other points here and there on the body. I know they are just little things, and no one else would see them, but I do and it drives me nuts!! whats the best way to fix them??
BowtieAaron Oct 3rd, 04, 9:42 AM the only way i know of, is the way we are doing a firebird at school. we are feather edging the chips out, and then repainting it.
maybe someone else has a better idea.

MARTINSR Oct 3rd, 04, 11:14 AM You could always brush touch them. Some times a brush touch is darn near invisible.
WestyJ69chevelle Oct 3rd, 04, 11:21 AM now when you say "brush touch" do you mean actually using a small brush on them??? I know pretty much nothing about bodywork . graemlins/clonk.gif
MARTINSR Oct 3rd, 04, 12:35 PM Yeah, on the edge of a panel for instance, it is darn near invisible if done right. You don't want to "brush" the paint on as the name implys, you want to "dab" it on.
If you put just the right amount of paint on the end of a small brush (we are talking a modeling kind of brush) you just "touch" the tip of the brush on the center of the chip and the paint flows off onto the chip. It will flow out to the edge of the chip, that edge acting as a "Dam" and stopping it from going further. It may look a little high at the time, but let the solvents flash out and it will sink down flat. At that point it is usually even lower than the surface of the surrounding paint. You can dab a little more and let it flash off (hours) and end up with a repair that looks pretty good.
Just don't try to "Brush" it on perfect, it will look just like you, well, brushed it on. smile.gif

baddbob71 Oct 3rd, 04, 9:49 PM What color is the car, some colors touch up better than others. The basic idea is to apply multiple coats untill the chip is filled slightly above the surrounding paintwhen dry, then the surface can be lightly colorsanded and rubbed out. Often times a striping dagger type brush works really well for panel edges when the damage is minor, one pull with the striping brush along the edge usually is invisable if the paint is a high covering basecoat color and mixed 70/30 with catalyzed clear, or just plain single stage.
sevt_chevelle Oct 3rd, 04, 11:18 PM A match stick also works well, the non wood ones of course
WestyJ69chevelle Oct 4th, 04, 9:44 AM its a 69 garnet red . I think the paint code is # 54??... the car was stripped down to bare metal before getting 3 coats of Dupont ChromaOne paint and 3 of clear...
