Hello all.
I'm starting again with another 69 Chevelle SS hard top. I've stripped it down to sheet metal and of course ther's lots of rust in the usual places. I plan to paint it the original code 67 burgundy.
My question: Should I use red primer or grey when I get to that point. Or will it matter. I want to use the whole PPG system, as my painter uses it and I hear it's good.
Thanks for the help..

The primer can be tinted to match your final color. There are several shades of dark red that will be right for your application...
I use S/W but I assume PPG would tint as well...
My 68 is Grecian Green and I tinted the filler primer a medium green...

Iam with Bill on this one. Use something that comes close to your final color. I say this for a few reasons
#1 you use less paint. An example would be GM's indigo blue, appling this over gray primer can lead up to 9 coats. I made this mistake painting a new hood for a S10, sealed it light gray 9coats later it was covered. Now when I get this color I apply a solid color first that covers great or use a tinted sealer or primer depending on my use, I normally get coverage in 3-4 coats.
#2 Rock chips. What better way of saying "Hey look at my rock chips" then with gray primer showing underneath a red or blue paint job. Why not have something that will help CAMO the chips. I live out on 3 miles of gravel in rural Iowa, which takes its toll on paint. A few years ago I built myself a Ford ranger extcab 4x4, two toned green and silver. One side I fixed, used tinted green primer other side is factory. Well now I have rock chips and the side with green primer is hard to spot, side with med gray primer(factory ford)sticks out.
Since you plan on using PPG graemlins/thumbsup.gif Ill give ya a few numbers. K36 (gray)primer surfacer can be tinted when sprayed as a surfacer and sealer. K93(clear) tinted when mixed as a surfacer and when sprayed as sealer. K38 my CHOICE of primer surfacer CAN NOT be tinted period. K38 has a better film build then k36 and shrinks less also graemlins/thumbsup.gif . Ive yet to use K93 so I wont mention any more about it then what I did. NCP272(clear) can also be tinted as surfacer and sealer. I dont care for the NCP series of primers, have had dieback problems when using this product, which is loss of gloss.
What I do is use k38 for my build coats of primer, then come back and spray a few light coats of k36 TINTED as a surfacer, or you could use it as a sealer. Using a tinted sealer vs surfacer is up to the person painting and I just prefer a surfacer instead of a sealer which just adds unneeded orange peel to the finish. But each painter to their own...Eric
