: nitrous?

i have a 1970 el camino with a sb 350 in it. Its the original motor, it has 94,000 miles on it and was purchased by my great grandfather new in 1970. I know that i am the only one who has ever pushed the motor, it still makes good compression and runs strong. Currently it has a 600 edelbrock carb, rpm manifold, 262 voodoo cam and long tubes. I would like to put a 75 or 100 shot of nitrous on it. Will i need to ugrade the fuel pump and to what? Also i have been looking at the NOS powershot kit and the edelbrock performer kit, which is the better quality and better all around kit?

I guess the answer to your question would depend on the current state of your fuel system. If you want your motor to keep on keepin' on, you'd better make sure your fuel pump can supply the carb and the fuel side of the N2O system. If your fuel system isn't up to snuff, you could go lean and grenade the motor.

I am by no means an expert on Nitrous systems, nor do I claim to be. I've just read enough to know what not to do.

I would at least look into some bigger fuel lines and a holley blue electric fuel pump, or at least an 80gph mechanical pump. I ran a 125hp shot on a 1970 300hp engine on pump gas with a little octane booster. well actually a lot. Two bottles. But I did have an air gap intake. It was in my Elky that ran 15.0s without the bottle and 13.8s with it. Only had 2.73 gears and some Radial t/a's. I never did hurt the motor, but found it was running lean because the blue pump didn't have enough voltage(bad connection). Just plan on running some good gas and run a retard box to the nitrous switch. Should retard 2-4 degrees. I have the Performer RPM system. I think I got it for $430. Looks a lot more quality than the NOS one except for the bottle. The valve is a standard valve. Also the NOS is easier to install. They have hard lines that can hold the solenoids up. The Edelbrock has stainless lines and you need to fabricate the brackets to mount the solenoids, or go buy the Edlebrock mounting plate(almost another 100 bucks) I hope this helps you out.

Ps. The Edelbrock kit goes up to 250hp in case you want a bigger shot.

I do not run N2O but have looked into a few systems. I like the idea of a separate fuel cell (1.5 - 2 gal) with an electric pump mounted on the core support dedicated for the N2O only. Just an idea.

I don't like the seperate fuel system deal. I have run that before. Some people ( including me at one time) think you can run some 110 in that cell and pump gas in the regular tank to increase the octane rating...well without getting into a long discussion it doesn't work like that. Plus it's a whole entire system to maintain, and the 1 gal cell needs to be topped off quite a bit.

I run a holley blue through my stock lines and can maintain 6lbs pressure spraying a 200 shot and feeding the motor too. I say definatly a better than stock pump for you to use. I don't care for the loud holley blue myself.

I would keep the spray to 125 or less and retard 4 deg timing. ( can be done right at the dist.) and definatly use 92 or 93..the highest pump gas you can get. A fuel pressure gauge would be good too, even if just used for testing to assure fuel pressure.

Mike, Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't looking at the octain being upped as much as the N2O/cam2 mix maybe being a safer bet.

so your saying to retard ignition timing by 2 to 4 degress at the distributer, currently i have it advanced. Also would a 110 holley or carter mechanical pump be good for the job. Also this car wont be a bottle baby i just want a little juice for some fun. After looking at both kits i think i like the nos kit better(power shot kit). Also what size jets for 75 shot and 100 shot i dont understand the measuring on them?

I'd run a Carter 172 mechanical pump

thats alot of fuel for my car, i would think a 110 holley would be good enough?
Well i asked for your guys opinions so, maybee your right?
