what is the best way to remove under coating on my 70 chevelle. I want to paint the under body with por-15 and top coat it with por chassis black to get the right color.

Eastwood has some new stuff out just for that purpose. Can't remember what it's called though. www.eastwoodcompany.com (http://www.eastwoodcompany.com)

It's called Undergone, and it's crap.

if the car is not complete, i'd heat it w/ a propane or acetyline torch and scrape it off.
this, obviously isn't a good idea if the interior is in the car.

Don't bother with the Eastwood remover. I ordered some, but sent it back for a refund. It doesn't work!!

thanks guy's

I guess it's the propane torch. what about sand blast? I am going to do that anyway but thought it would be better to chemically remove the undercoat before blasting. will blasting remove undercoat effectively?

I used a bottle of mineral spirits. It stunk a bit, but it got the undercoating off.

I used an industrial grade sandblaster and it took the undercoating off beautifully.

is dipping the whole shell of the car in acid out of the question? it'll remove all the paint, undercoating, and rust. Car Craft did it to a 'cuda...never seen it done myself but i've heard good results. the only problem then is getting paint into every nook and cranny to keep it from rusting again.

John,

The torch will work but it's dangerous. The undercoating can ignite and flame up. It's happened to a good friend of mine.

I tried Eastwoods undergone, not good, however their cleaner, not the remover, works great once the under coating is off.

The safest way I found was a good heat gun. I heated a section at a time, 5" x 5", and with a flexible putty knife I scrapped it off. It came off like butter. It was so easy my wife did one wheel well for me.

A heat gun will cost about $30.00 - after the undercaoting is off, spray on EASTWOODS undergone Cleaner, wipe with papaer towels.

Hope this helps

Rich

Cuz,
A real heatgun, bodyman style,[snap-on,mac-tools]will blister enamel, decals, undercoating ect.If you have the bucks, dip that puppy. You'll find out if there's any hod in her. The dipper will even prime it on site for you. Nothing is cleaner when done!

I've done several undercoating strip jobs and nothing works as good as the heat gun. No mess and very simple to scrape off even the thickest layer of goo with just a putty knife. Sweep up the large chunks and then use a solvent (100% mineral spirits works as good as anything) to take off the very last of the residue. You'll never regret buying the gun either, it comes in handy for all sorts of jobs (I just used mine this morning to heat up a frozen hydraulic coupler).

The gun is similar to an electronics heat gun except they come with a variety of tips for different heating patterns and typically move more air as well. One tip even has a built in shield for working near things that might be affected by the heat. You can get one for around $20 at any home improvement store. Mine's a Wagner and it's been through a couple of tile strippings around the house as well.
