I recently picked up a 396 with the following data:

BLOCK CASTING NUMBER: 3955272 T

BLOCK CASTING DATE: L26 8

HEAD CASTING NUMBER: 3872702

HEAD CASTING DATE: A 46

ENGINE ASSEMBY DATE/SUFFIX CODE and Partial VIN: T1227JC

VIN Code on the oil filter pad: HI PERF
KPA33
11

I have ID the block as a 69 396, 2 bolt or 4 bolt. I also ID the heads as 65-66 oval, closed, 98cc heads for either the 396 or the 427.

What I would like to know is the following:

1. What car did this come in?

2. When was it orginal motor assembled?

3. What version of the 396: 325 hp, 350hp, 375 hp?

4. Is this a good base to build a 500 hp/500 ftlbs or torque motor?

thanks

Forgot to mention, the motor has some sort of metal tag right below the front of the intake where it seals to the block that has the numbers 607725 on it.

You're correct on the block and head years. The block was a Chevelle 396, 350 hp, L-34, manual trans. Engine assembled at Tonawanda, Dec 27, 1968. Heads are '66 oval port from a 396, 325 or 350 hp or 427, 390 hp. It would be a good basis for a 500 hp engine but would have to be more highly modified than say a 454. A true 500 hp 396 would be somewhat radical for a street engine.

Did you check on the rough casting near the oil filter for the VIN stamping?

That's where a lot of the 69 engines were stamped.

yes, the only vertical ridge above the oil filter is rough but I can't see or feel any numbers on it. Toward the front of the engine from this pad I have the following numbers cast upside down:

high perf
pa88
K 14

Anything?

According to the info at www.nastyz28.com, the JC code is 69 350 HP with a manual trans.

Sounds like a nice engine -- I'm wondering if it’s the engine that originally came with my Chevelle? My car was assembled the 2nd week of January in Baltimore. If by a long shot it is my old engine and it doesn’t work out for your 500hp would you be willing to sell it?
