: lower ball joint removal
jennas70ss Jun 2nd, 05, 12:31 PM rebuilding 70 chevelle. lower ball joint removal, do they need to be pressed out or is it something i can do without a press? also upper and lower a arm bushings can they be done at home or is it easier to bring them to a shop and have them pressed out and new ones pressed in? any info would be gladly appreciated. I been rebuilding mopars for the last 16 years, decided to get out ( there too expensive, plus I regained consciousness ) and go back to my first love ( chevelles, I had 3 70 super sports when I was younger ) just cant remember what goes where and all the little tricks... once again thanks for the help
1badss396 Jun 2nd, 05, 12:35 PM You can beat em out on your own, but need to have them pressed back in.
:clonk:
6t7gto Jun 2nd, 05, 2:59 PM i just finished mine.
beat them out.
and then use a ball joint press to put the ball joint and bushings back in.
make sure you support the A-arms so you don't collapse them when you press the bushings in. i used a socket for support.
no need to pay a shop.

no need to pay a shop.
...if you happen to have a ball joint press. ;)
6t7gto Jun 2nd, 05, 6:04 PM autozone rents them for free, around here.

chris454ss1970 Jun 2nd, 05, 11:58 PM I just went the Autozone route on my lower ball joints. It took about 30 minutes to do both sides, press old out and press new ones in. You have to put up a deposit at Autozone, $100 I think. You take the tool back you get your money back. Put your deposit up in cash, other wise you have to wait 7 days to get your money back. I found that one out the hard way. Hope this helps.

chris454ss1970 Jun 5th, 05, 1:32 AM Ask for a ball joint press. Looks like a big "c" clamp. It works real well.
kwnate Jun 6th, 05, 7:17 PM I had a shop press mine in, totally ef'ed up my paint :( For $50 I coulda done better with a 20lb sledgehammer...
6t7gto Jun 8th, 05, 8:14 AM that is why i did mine myself.
my arms were powdercoated and i wrapped the balljoint press with duct tape to prevent marring.
worked great.

Chris R Jun 9th, 05, 12:06 AM The best thing to do is since you need to press the new ones in. You might as well have the old ones pressed out instead of beating it out with a hammer. If you get ahold of the ball joint press kit, you have all you need to do both. An impact wrench will certainly come in handy for this but not required.
