its a 70 malibu with a 454 with around 515 h.p. I'm just wondering what type of pan to use and one that will clear the crossmember.it is mainly for the street with 1 or 2 passes at the track. I appreciate all the help with this motor!!

My suggestion would be stick to a stock style, I think it's a LS7 oil pan. I went with a Moroso 6qt pan with kick-outs and now it is almost imposible to get to the oil filter and the pan came with a 1/4" pipe thread female nipple for the dip stick. Had to buy the Moroso universal dipstick for it. And also with the Moroso pan on I could not fit the motor and trans into the car as one piece. The pan would hit the crossmember and the 2004r belhousing would hit the firewall. Had to take it back out and separate the trans from the motor, put the motor in then the trans from under the car (sucked). Just my .02

Glenn raises some valid issues. I just went through one he&& of a time swapping my old 396 for a 496. SImple unbolt a and insert B -NOT. Bought a replacement "stock" pan (not unlike Moroso sells) and it won't clear the cross member. Got the Moroso kickout pan like Glenn, and had to separate the motor and trans (not a giant issue, just another hassle). I run Hedman's and oil filter clearance is not an issue for me. BUT, you do need to get the special dipstick, and it is a PITA to install. Mine has to go thru the headers, so you cant put it in until the header is in place, but then it is nearly impossible to get a wrench on to tighten. You can just get one on it from under the car, and make about a 1/8th turn with each twist of the wrench.
If a stock pan will fit - use it, especially looking at your intended usage. Whatever you use, buy the pan, dipstick and pickup together. Saves some hassles.
The LS7 pan would not fit my 67 El Camino. Been there, tried that.

Just put a Moroso 6 Qt. kick out pan in my '72 yesterday. It was a PITA but I did not need to separate the Trans from engine, oil filter is not a problem. As far as the dipstick tube I bought a brass to compression fitting. One side of the fitting is 1/4 inch NPT that screws into the pan. The other side was a compression fitting that was a little to small for the od of the dipstick tube so I passed a 3/8 inch drill bit through the fitting and now the dipstick fits nice and snug when the compression fitting is tightened. Hope this helps.

You might not need a deep sump pan, a stock non-chrome replacement will be fine. If you did want the extra insurance, I use the Moroso 20451 ( with only 6 qts in it). powder coated stockers are around $50, stock Milodon's around $85 while the Moroso was $165 over at K&S. You can see them here, pp132-137

I went with the extra capacity sump as a little extra insurance. The last pan I had on was a stock pan, but I was running an HV pump which was a big mistake. I used the kick out style because I was concerned about ground clearance, my '72 sits pretty low and the kick out sump is tucked behind the cross member very nicely.

Ditto on L71's comments, ran a HV pump, spinning the old L88 to 7200-7400 so I went completely anal the second time through, blueprinted M77 with a heavier spring and more oil than it needs. Again, I run the pan ( uses a stock dipstick BTW), to the "Add one qt" line as extra windage insurance as I feel 6 qts is more than adequate at any rpm. The 20451 Moroso I use looks to be a little shorter than that Milodon you picture,( 9" depth) and its orange so it's near stock in appearance. Be sure to check the pickup depth, the one K&S gave me was wrong. Thankfully I had an anal machinist who checked it and didnt assume.

I would call Milodon. They helped me pick out a stroker oil pan for my Chevelle that would clear the cross member and not cause any other issues. I couldn't be happier. Below is an excerpt from their website with the phone number I called. Best of luck,

Steve

o.k.guys heres the situation my machine shop put this pan on http://store.summitracing.com/largeimage.asp?part=SUM-G3502 and of course it doesnt fit. Hits the cross member.Either I can buy a new pan and pay the difference, which is about a $100 or have him take off an inch or so and cost me nothing. what would you guys do!!

Pay the difference. I was also in a dilemma about which pan to use. The way I looked at it was that I was not going to skimp on the pan since it contains the life blood of the motor.

I doubt that pan will fit uynless you cut the front corners off the sump at about a 45 angle. Don't do it. Just get a stock replacement like:

http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=11449

Milodon 30710

Summit SUM-G3510X

You will be money ahead, and need far fewer Excedrin! Just be sure to get the correct pickup for the pan you buy. For some of the pans, you can get a new Melling pump with the appropriate pickup already installed. Saves brazing it yourself.

L71 just bought the moroso 20401 and about the dipstick, cant see paying $17 for a new one. does the compression fitting have to fit over the little lip on the dipstick or does it go up to that!!! Thanks for the help!!!
