Hope that someone out there has some input. I wanted my new gas tank powdercoated (GM34G). It has the filler neck already installed. When the tank went through the bake oven, the guy said that the solder melted out of the joint where the neck enters the tank. Is this seal made of solder, or lead? Can I epoxy this joint, or should it be soldered (leaded) as before.

I don't have your answer, but I can point you in the right direction. Several of the guys on the 55-57 Modified forum on www.ChevyTalk.org (http://www.ChevyTalk.org) have had the same problem. If you register (it's free) and do a search, you can find the old threads and they might give you some help.

Russ,
I would be curious as to what temp they baked the tank at ?? I thought 350 - 400 F is about the most used for powder coating and no solder that I know of will melt at that low of a temperature ?

They told me that it's around 400 deg. If it wasn't solder, I guess I need to find out what it was. I looked at my old tank, and it looks kind of tight at the bottom, so it would need something that would flow into the joint, much like solder would into a sweat joint when you plump copper lines in the house. I have a friend who's a great tig welder, if I have to.

Brazing would work just fine I'm sure.

I went and checked it out........had to be solder.
Another friend will tig it up, and it'll be fine.
Thanks to all for responding.
