: What would you do, sell it, or pay it off?
three85stroker May 31st, 05, 10:57 PM As some of you may know, I ride a motorcycle (pics in my signature). It brings me great joy. But lately I've been thinking of selling it to lower my bills, and also to help get my Chevelle finished sooner. If I sell the bike, I save $350 a month, and I have approx. $4K after paying off the loan, that I can spend on the 'Velle. I only owe $2,600 on the bike, which, making the minimum payment, is 20 more payments.
The thought of being without a motorcycle is literally making me sick. But the thought of (finally) having my Chevelle almost makes me feel better. It is a vicious cycle. I'm torn between the two. The bike has been a tangible thing that I can go out and appreciate. It's something that I can go out and look at anytime, and be happier with it then, than I was with it the day before. It has been my best vehicular friend for almost 2 years, never giving me a problem. I've never driven the Chevelle, so it seems to be a little less 'real', even though I've been slowly working towards having a drivable Chevelle since I was barely 17 (read= has been dumping money into the thing since age 17, with nothing to show for it yet).
What would you guys do in my position?
I know I would eventually get another motorcycle, but it's just so hard to let something like that go.
elco68 Jun 1st, 05, 12:07 AM Never had a street bike.Thinking of giving up my motocross one.6 years old now and needs replaced.Haven't riden it in 4 months.Need room for a compressor and welder, and if sell the bike now will pay for one of them.Always had a minibike of dirtbike for 30 years now.But need to get my car finished.
Hi-po SS 454 Jun 1st, 05, 12:29 AM I'd say your are in deep *. BUT, in your case its time to say good Bye to your Bike. Get the Velle on the road and than look forward to getting a Bike again one day !!!!!
cody Jun 1st, 05, 12:30 AM well I just learned for the first time how to ride a bike today! never driven anything with 2 wheels ever! I was a natural after 5 minutes i was doing 70 mph in second gear screaming through the neighborhood like an irresponsilbe teenager!! I was on an 02 yamaha R6 and it is all polished and custom painted so i was nervous about dropping it. I would definetly keep the bike. I would save up and just pay it off ASAP. Not sure how you are financially but $2600 aint gonna be much money to pay off at all, and to only recieve $4000 back!! although not sure how much it is worth? Just keep it(why are your payments $350 a month but it will take 20 months to pay it off?) Keep it!!
Bomber '67 Jun 1st, 05, 12:30 AM What I would do and what would make you happy could be two highly unrelated things...or maybe not!
What are you, nuts? Go ahead and start a bigger vehicle collection. The two you already have are just for starters! When you have a half dozen or more then maybe, just MAYBE, you could think about thining the herd. When you have something that makes you happy - never give it up, except for a more desparate financial need. People like different things, you like your vehicles - enjoy them and make no apologies. You are a gearhead - gearheads owns vehicles just for the fun of it. Non-gearheads would never understand.
I still have a valid motorcycle license although it has been more than 20 years since I actually owned a motorcycle. This is what I had www.cbx.se Some life changes and moves between two states had me jettisoning all sorts of things that I liked. As soon as I could I started buying fun cars again.

Marci Jun 1st, 05, 1:29 AM I say keep the bike. Restoring a car takes years...you've only been at it for a few years. Especially if the thought of selling the bike is making you sick. You can never have too many toys!
I just sold my Jeep (I went 4x4ing in it alot) and I totally regret it and I didn't even have it that long.
Good luck!
Chris R Jun 1st, 05, 1:56 AM Well if you were in this climate I would say sell. Can you ride all year around there? It depends on your intrest in riding. Since you seem to enjoy riding and cant wait for the next time you get to go riding then I would say keep it.
ZZ69chevelle Jun 1st, 05, 3:37 AM I regret getting rid of every bike, car, and truck I ever had. Pay it off, and don't get rid of it unless a better bike comes along.
jocww Jun 1st, 05, 3:44 AM u can always sell the velle and get a couple few more bikes. just a thought
1BLACKHARLEY Jun 1st, 05, 10:45 AM don't know what the fuel prices up there are, but down here, the bike pays for itself. you will regret the sale. you are not a guy who happens to have a bike, you are a rider, or else you'd have sold it after the accident. you live in a great place to ride, it's riding season, and your a rider. ask yourself, what exactly are you going to do with your time once the $4k runs out, and the velle insn't on the road? if you really need to get your finances under control, then sell the bike, and buy one for cash, or one with a lower payment. it won't be as "bad ass", as your gsxr, but as you mature, it's not what you ride, but that you ride. even if i couldn't afford my harley (both are finally paid for) i'd have my big ass on something else, sportster, cb400, old triumph, what ever it took, to put some handlebars and a seat under me.
MikeH Jun 1st, 05, 11:26 AM I've owned bikes off and on... would the money you get for your bike be enough to finish the chevelle? if not, I would say dont sell because then you still dont have the chevelle finished, maybe a little closer, but still not finished and no bike to look at or ride.
three85stroker Jun 1st, 05, 12:16 PM ...why are your payments $350 a month but it will take 20 months to pay it off?...
Bike payment is $130 a month, insurance is now $220 (went up when I renewed my policy this month, by $500 a year). 20 payments on the bike @ $130 = $2,600
Thanks for all the replys. It helps to know I'm not the only one who would elect to keep the bike.
motoxguru Jun 1st, 05, 8:18 PM I sold my MX bike once. I didn't have a bike for 2 weeks before I broke down and bought another. Ever since, I've bought a new bike every two years. You will regret it I promise. Also, if your tossing around the idea of maybe getting a cheaper bike, it won't be the same.
Your passion may be different from mine, but I'd get rid of my cars before my bikes. But that's just me and that's what I know.
Does it have a lean against it? An option you might consider is paying your bike off on a credit card or something. That way your insurance will drop to a couple hundred for the year since you won't need full coverage. That would save you about 200 a month.
Good luck with your decision, I'm glad i'm not in your shoes.
Clint44 Jun 1st, 05, 9:20 PM This is what I had www.cbx.se
