I'm nineteen, and have been restorring my 68 chevelle since my mom bought if for me for my sixteenth birthday. I already know i want to go black with it. But what type of paint job should i go for. This car is my everday driver and will be sitting outside of my apartments, not in a garage. I was told that a base/clear coat is good for show cars, but isn't tough enough to drive daily. I'm looking to spend around 2,000 dollars.

Somebody needs to tell GM that a base coat and clear coat is the wrong thing to put on cars. I don't know how long they been doing it but I know my 90 truck that is black has clear on it, my 93 vette, my wife had a 84 camaro that had clear on it.

Basecoat/clearcoat urethane is the hardest paint that I know of. It's pretty durable on factory cars and it's easy to work with. However, its not cheap. My gallon of Torch Red with hardner, reducer, clear, and clear hardener cost over $700.
