View Full Version : Astro spindles for tall spindle swap?

Hey, everybody.

Parting out a '92 chevy astro. Spindles are 2" taller, and the steering arm sticks out about 3/4" further. Can I use these in a tall spindle swap? I measured the brake rotor, and it's about 11.5".

Astro spindles would require you to do all the homework. The rotors will not work as they are 5X5 bolt circle. Maybe they can be re drilled/maybe not. I don't know what the offset is from the LBJ to the hub face, it may change track width requiring different wheels. The ball joint taper is different. You should be able to drill the upper control arms to accept the truck style ball joint and have the lower ball joint urned down to "A" body spec size. Seems like a lot of work.

Yeah, I knew about the 5x5 bolt pattern, but I may be putting in a 9" rearend from a 70s Lincoln with a 5x5 bolt pattern, so I figured I could go that way all around. I was just wondering if anybody knew the dimensions. I don't have my heart set on it - just don't want to throw the spindles away if they'll work as easily as a B-body spindle.

By the way, I don't know if I've said it before, but NICE elky!

Thanks, it's a work in progress (probably forever).

They would probably work in a pinch as "tall" spindle peices but I am not a big fan of the typical tall spindles anyways. What dimensions do you want? I have all the typical "tall" spindle numbers at work.

S10s were not a 5x5 (unless 4x4) and I believe swap with the Astro. You might be able to put a S10 bearing on the spindle. As Dennis said do all the homework.

Dennis68, the dimensions I'm curious about are:

How tall is the spindle from top to bottom? (top surface facing ball joint to bottom surface facing ball joint), How far is the tie rod end mount from the lower ball joint mount both vertically and horizontally? With the rotor installed, how far outboard is the wheel mounting surface from the centerline of the top and bottom ball joint mounts?

93Polo - aren't the S10 rotors smaller? The Astro rotors measure 11.5".

I'm not sure on the rotor size. The only reason I knew the S10s weren't 5x5 is we tried to swap wheels. My parents own a S10 4x4 blazer, S10 extended cab (2wd) and an Astro, and the S10 extended cab had a flat. I understand most of the chassis swaps between the S10s and Astro.

How tall is the spindle from top to bottom? (top surface facing ball joint to bottom surface facing ball joint)8.75" How far is the tie rod end mount from the lower ball joint mount both vertically and horizontally?LBJ centerline to tie rod centerline is 6.5", tie rod is even with LBJ boss +/- .25" (this will significantly slow your steering ratio and add quite a bit to your turning radius) With the rotor installed, how far outboard is the wheel mounting surface from the centerline of the top and bottom ball joint mounts? Best estimate is LBJ to hub fact is 5" UBJ to hub face is 6" at 1*neg camber.

S10 rotors are a miniscule 9"; same as G body chassis.

Thanks, you guys! You ROCK!

Polo -
I suspected that the S10 might have the smaller circle, as I see them with Camaro and Monte rims all the time, and one of the magazines put newer S10 rims on that LS1 Chevelle.

Denny -
Thanks for the info! Very thorough! I'll measure the Astro rotors again with this info in mind.

.
S10's run 5X4.75 bolt circle...same as most other mid-size/full size GM's.
