Ok, I started to take my carb apart tonight to rebuild it. I ran into one snag...I can't seem to get the air valve dashpot out so the top cover can come off. Anyone know what I am doing wrong or how to get this air valve dashpot out? I'm stuck at the moment trying to figure this out. Any input from a carb guy?

This air valve won't even raises up to let the secondaries open...

Rodeo73,

What is the carb #? That does not look like a 1967 Quadrajet. It looks to me like a 1965, or 1966 model. I say that because it looks different than my 1967 that I had (carb #7027202), it also looks different than the carb in photos in my 1967 Chassis Overhaul Manual. I do know that they made an early and a late version for 1967.

Could you post two side pics of the airvalve dashpot? There is probably a roll pin that you can push out, or a clip somewhere.

It's possible that you might be able to leave the airvalve dashpot installed and remove the airhorn anyway. I think that I have seen pictures that way.

This carb is suppose to be the original carb my Jan '67 396 came with. There is no carb # stamped into the housing. Was told this is an early 67 version and that it may have just had a sticker with the info on it.

I found a tear down pic of a 4MV carb and it matches what mine looks like. I knocked out a roll pin that was holding the back side of it to the top cover. Then unhooked the rod that makes this level/rod connect to the secondary butterflies. The dash pot has a small hole that is just the size of the rod itself and it comes up thru the top cover and makes a 90 degree bend that attaches to the level that crosses the top.

If the dashpot was suppose to stay in the carb and just remove the top, it would have a problem. I don't see how to get a 90 degree bend to slide down thru a hole the same size of the rod itself.

All I can find out about this dashtop is its suppose to slow the secondaries air butterflies down when the secondaries kick in. So isn't this suppost to move freely?

I have never had one of this style apart and this is the only thing thats holding me up. All this pics look like this is a plunger, something like an accel pump.

I would assume that the dashpost piston should move smoothly in the bore. If it doesn't, either the piston has swollen, or the bore is in need of some cleaning.

It is nice to have an original carb for your car, but I've heard bad things about the 1967 and earlier Qjs. I've heard of people refer to them as "patty melt" carbs. Supposedly, they were an engine fire waiting to happen. The earlier style needle and seat, and the weakness of the plug on the fuel inlet gave it that reputation. The idle vent in the front also allows fine dust to collect in the power piston bore.

If you need more info, let me know. I have the earlier edition of the Doug Roe Quadrajet book in my office.

Ok, if the dashpot is suppose to move freely and it doesn't want to move. What can be done to get it to move again? I tried some WD40 and it still is stuck. :(

I put the carb back together cause I am thinking about taking it to a shop to be done. I don't want to screw anything up, but if I can get this dashpot to move, I would be willing to do it myself.

Any suggestions?

The best stuff is Kroil. Let that soak for a while. It will come apart.

You are going to find that that particular carb is going to be hard to get parts for if you need to replace that piston.
