: 68 front grill work & Engine bay - what color black?

Looking for the correct black to use on the lower grill 'lip'. This is the piece below the actual grill, and tucked under the bumper. Also, would this be the same color for the engine bay?

The shop I use stocks Spies Hecker, but any brand code would be a good start.

Thanks, Kurt

Kurt,
I think these are the same color as the body. I am getting ready to paint mine, so I hope that is correct.

Anybody else?

Look at your car and let us know what color this piece is.

Hi Dave,

It's black on mine, and the car is Gold, so it's not body coded, or at least not on the 300's. Maybe it's different on SS's?

Thanks

Kurt,

might want to e-mail mild68ss. He'd be able to tell you.

I want to say it's either semi-gloss or flat black.

Kurt,

Well, if mine is supposed to be black, you saved me a bunch of wasted time.

I'll bet Don Lightfoot will know about my car.

DON , YO

I better email him.

Well, it looks like I've opened up a can of worms here http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

I'll do some emailing and see what I cna figure out. Would it help to do a poll of 68 owners and see what other people have on their cars?

Dave: What color is yours right now?

The original is Rust and black. However, I don't know if that was like that from the factory. I got a new one from Ground Up and was about to paint it blue. I would rather paint it black as it will me much less work. I imagine it will be either Chassis black or under hood black. I emailed Don to see what his is.

Kurt,

On the 3 68s I have owned (one a 37K original paint car), all of them have black bumper fillers.

I also have noticed this from a friend who currently owns 8 68 chevelles.

I'm sure you'll find the same with Jerry aka mild68ss.

I'm just not informed wether it is semi gloss or flat.

Thanks Joe

I just mailed Jerry and I'll post what he says. I'm thinking it's a semi black, but figured I'd better check before I mess around with paint and whatnot.

Don must have been sitting on the computer, cause he already replied to my email.

His is semi gloss black. He does say that he cannot guarentee that it is correct.
I think there is enough evidence here to assume that it is semi gloss black.

Thanks for posting this today Kurt.
I was going to paint it tonight. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

I'm good with Semi Gloss. I think flat would look odd and show too much wear.

And Dave: You realize that you've just been shown the error of your ways by a moderate-liberal, right http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks everyone for the help.

Shhh!
Don't let that get around, ok? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Painted my filler panel last night.
I did it with NAPA's Chassis Black.
Looks great. Nice and Semi Glossy-ish.

Putting it in tonight.
Thanks again for your timely posting Kurt.

Dave

PS

Your not as liberal as you think.
Or, I'm changing..? Nahh..

I emailed Jerry , aka mild68ss, and he's good with the semi-gloss as well. HE didn't have the -exact- color, but thought that a 60% semi would be correct.

Dave: I'm sort of a middle of the road guy who swerves from left to right sometimes http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Kurt,

I'm surprised you didn't ask me. Or did I **** you off? You know I have five 68's.

Originally three of them came with the semi-gloss black. Two of them came with same color of the car. All five have now been painted the same color as the rest of the cars. Which for anyone who doesn't know, they are all painted some sort of a metalic dark red (but it's not cordovan maroon). These had the original paint on them. Go figure.

Hey Paul,

Pissed off? Of course not. I sent you a message last week about my new wheels and a few other misc things. I figured I'd run this past you when I heard back.

Regardless, thanks for the input. Of course, you did just further complicate things, and have quite possibly given Dave a stroke, but at least now I know that the semi-gloos is correct, and it would certainly look better than Ivy Gold.

Paul: Does your office email still work? I know you switched locations, but I just assumed that it was still good?

Semi-Gloss and all. My heart stopped for a second or two.

this got it going again.
