: Why is Grundy insurance so cheep?
I got on line quotes from three or four companys and Grundy is about 250.00 cheeper than the others?
For the same coverage..................?
Anyone know why?
Is there a reason I am missing? lack of coverage? loop hole, fine print, poor service?
Any comments will be appreciated.........

250 cheaper??? Hagerty, 2 cars 20k and 25k agreed coverage approx 500 for both.... So I'd pay 250 for 2 for 2 cars??? Hmmmmm......
73Malibu May 30th, 05, 8:26 AM If you follow all the restrictions, storage in locked garage, only drive to and from events or cruises. They figure the chances of anything happening to your car is remote. They know you are doing your best to avoid any possible scratch. This makes the probablilty of any loss claim quite low, thus low rates!!
Thanks for the replys:
I realize how the insurance works, I just cant figure the reason for the big difference in price?
Grundys quote for a modifyed car at 30,000. was 245.00 a year.
Hagarys quote was 482.00 a year for a modifyed car agreed value of 30,000 thats 237.00 difference?
How can Grundy be half the price, for the same thing?

rocks66ss May 30th, 05, 9:06 AM Have you considered calling them and asking? It might be a quicker answer than asking people on TC who don't work for Grundys.

von May 30th, 05, 11:09 AM Hagerty is pretty reasonable for basically stock cars but if they consider it modified, the rate increases drastically for some reason.
djw May 30th, 05, 11:19 AM Might try a third quote to see who's "right". I use these guys.

Bill Rose May 30th, 05, 12:12 PM I have Grundy ins. and the only restrictions are, no driver under the age of 25, can't drive to work/school on a regular basis. Thats it.
My car is also very stock. $325 for $45,000 agreed value...
brimac May 30th, 05, 12:28 PM Like djw69elky, ... I'm also using Americian Collectors Insurance.
Thanks again for all the replys...................
I did call Hagartys and the say my car is not stock, infact I was told if you as much as put on a aftermarket intake, your car is not stock.
dJw69elki, I was looking for some insite as to what others expierence has been with these companys, I felt I may not have gotten a straight answer asking a rep. of these companys?
I also thought that what this board was about? Helping others if ya can, if not I personally just keep it to myself........................
I didnt realize under 25 couldn't use the car on Grundy, Hagarty said 22 was ok, I guess thats a big risk in itself?
Mabe thats the difference, I did see a big jump between stock and modifyed prices with Hagarty and Amerian Collector car Ins.

Are you sure your paperwork/contract actually SAYS that? This comes up every time we start talking about the cheap collector's insurance companies. I called several of them and asked a few basic questions and was told that these things would NOT be covered -- or, at least, that there might be some problems making the determination -- or, in some cases, that they might be covered if I CALL THEM FIRST and let them know that I was about to do it:
1. Drive to work once or twice a year to show it to coworkers -- and it gets hit in the parking lot. Both Grundy and Hagerty told me that this would not be covered the first time I asked. When I asked Hagerty again a few months later, they said it might be covered if I called them and told them I was doing it first.
2. We go out for a Sunday drive -- with no destination in mind -- just driving around, grabbing a bit to eat maybe, and then heading back home. We get in an accident on the way. Again, both told me that, technically, the policy does not cover this because there was no specific destination in mind -- we were not going to a "show" or anything else specific -- so it was outside of the contract agreement.
3. Drive approximately 250 miles to relatives for a weekend visit because they wanted to see the car. So, specific destination in mind, but certainly not a show. Grundy told me not covered. Hagerty told me "it depends" because 250 miles is right on the edge of what is allowed. Said would "probably" be covered if I called first.
Sorry, but there are just too many "probablies" and "may be covered" and "no, not covered!" responses in there for my tastes.
According to what you just said, your policy would cover all of those things -- which seems odd since Grundy is telling me the opposite.
I see people all the time saying things like "Well, I'm covered as long as I don't take it to work on a regular basis." That sounds great -- but please, please make sure that your contract actually seems to read that way -- because the sample ones that I have read certainly don't -- and when I asked them directly about such things, they certainly weren't "absolutely covered" about it.
Of course, maybe your contract is different. I'm simply suggestion that you make sure -- especially when you are here telling people that "that's it" as far as restrictions go. We don't want anyone making some bad assumptions...

Again thanks for the reply..
It looks to me that mabe ya have to be a lawyer to figure the best company to go with.
Ya pay big money and cant drive it cause it's not covered, or pay less and cant drive it cause it's not covered?
Anyone know of a company where ya can drive and be covered?

spi7 May 30th, 05, 9:48 PM I just went through the same deal with insurance. Grundy said you can not drive it to work, Hagerty said just a couple of times a year. Grundy told me my car was only worth 18,000. I wanted 25,000. 69 matching numbers ss never restored, no rust ever, with pop and original bill of sale. I don't know where they came up with that. I have the original motor but it has a 454 in it now. Hagerty said as long as the motor isn't over 50 hp than stock than it's not cosidered modified. If it was modified the insurance doubled. They insured it for 25,000. 202.00 a year. I checked with several companies and they all were about the same as Grundy.
The person I talked to at Hagarty said, aftermarket intakes,heads,exhaust,ect.........
Would put a car into the modified class, and your rite, the rate does double.
Grundy's rates didnt double when I selected modified class for a quote?

Um, just go with a normal insurance company. They won't offer Stated Value coverage in most states -- but if you are documented well enough with pictures, estimates, and such, then it shouldn't be a problem.
My wife's 70 SS is insured with AAA -- just like our other "normal" cars. That way, I don't worry about where and when we take it anywhere. Plus, as a bonus, AAA will tow it home instead of to the nearest shop if I want -- which we have done twice so far (once for an eletrical problem and once for a broken heater hose). Both situations where it was great to pay nothing and get it towed home so that I could do the simple repair, of course, without having to have it taken to a shop.
And we don't pay too crazy a rate. It isn't Hagerty-cheap, but at least I don't have to worry about how the car is used -- ever.

spi7 May 31st, 05, 8:32 PM I told Hagerty that I had a bigger motor in the car and they said as long as it wasn't 50 hp over the stock motor it was considered original. I guess it depends on who you talk to. Sounds like a bunch of loopholes to me!
Bob Tiley May 31st, 05, 9:06 PM I have had Grundy insurance for about 9 years with no problems. Jim Grundy himself checked out my photos as he came through the lobby and said the car looked great and he had a story of a 69 Chevelle he rode in when in high school that the throttle got stuck wide open. Grundy's offices are in the area and I wanted insurance that day, so I went to the office with cash and waited while they printed the ins. card.
I have had one major accident when a woman pulled out in front of me and took out my front bumper, pass fender, door and dented the quarter. Grundy dealt with my body shop directly and took care of the repair right away and then called me later to say that they would be going after her insurance company for thier money.
You can only drive the car for pleasure driving or car club events ect.- not to work or school. On the day of my accident I had left work early and went home to pick up the car and went to pick up my wife from her work for a nice ride home with the top down.
American Collectors is more loose - you can drive the car for anything as long as it is less than xxxx miles per year
