: Tire / Rim Suggestions ?
71-SS350 May 27th, 05, 8:16 PM I am looking for some ideas for my '71 Chevelle to replace the tired ol' Cragar SS rims. The chrome on them is flaking as usually happens and I want a fresh look for the car. I am currently leaning towards 15 x 7 Ralleys up front and 15 x 8 Ralleys on the rear. Not sure about tire size as I need to replace tires at the same time. Want a good "old school" muscle car stance as I guess I'm old school myself. Any ideas and or photos of such would be appreciated.
ss1cars May 27th, 05, 9:50 PM 235/60/15,5 spoke ss rim
SS4Real May 27th, 05, 10:50 PM I just went through this same process and I looked throught a zillion threads on this board, went to a bunch of car shows, and did a ton of homework. I went with front 15 X 7 chrome Wheel Vintiques SS wheels with 15 X 8 in the back. The front tires are 235/60/15 and the rears are 255/60/15. It gives you the classic muscle car look without going overboard. Just got back from the GTO Pacific Northwest Regional Pre Cruise tonight and a guy had the same setup. It was really good looking. The tires are BFG's Radial TA's and I got the wheels from Summit.
Hi-po SS 454 Jun 1st, 05, 10:56 AM I have a 71 and are at present running 235/60/15 front and 255/60/15 on rear with 7 inch ralley front and 8 inch ralley on rear. Check my showroom for photos
71-SS350 Jun 10th, 05, 9:05 PM Thanks Guys for the suggestions.
Hi-po SS 454, I don't get on the Chevelle board often but when I did today I was really pleased and surprised when I checked your showroom photos. Your Chevelle is painted the exact same color scheme as my '71 SS. # 26 Mulsanne Blue with White SS stripes. I just recently found a pair of 15x8 Rallies to mate up with the 15x7's I have for the front. The 235's vs. the 255's really look good. Looks like a good choice to me. 'Course my Chevelle paint and body is not near as nice as yours but with enough time, money and effort I have high hopes to change that problem.
Not sure if my 15x8 Rallies are original or re-pops. They are marked:
K1 87
15 x 8
20 1 23 (These numbers are stamped in close proximity at angles
Anybody have some input on what I have? Got them in some parts trading along with the stainless trim rings and derby style caps. Caps have some issues but I have plenty extras. Any info is much appreciated.
Hi-po SS 454 Jun 11th, 05, 11:40 AM 71-SS350,
thanks for the kind words. Always did like that color combo . I don't see a whole lot of it in TC, but it works for me. Can't help with those rim numbers. I have repo trim rings in rear and orig. in front, on orig. GM rims
71-SS350 Jun 14th, 05, 9:25 PM After doing some home work it would appear that the rims I traded for are original Corvette Ralleys. I forgot to add that the letters " J J " are stamped into the rim at the 15 x 8 K 1 87 stamping. I pulled one of the trim rings which are polished stainless and the letters " AZ" are stamped into the rim near the air valve. I've been told this signifies an original GM 'Vette rim. Any one with more knowledge care to confirm this for me? Thanks in advance.
Hotrod_Haven Dec 8th, 05, 7:24 AM This is on a set of 15x8s I recently bought to put on my 68 Malibu (has a 70 Chevelle 12 bolt rear).
K 187 7 23 AZ
K = Kelsey Hayes Mfg.
1 = Romulus, Michigan
8 = 1978
7 = July
7 = 7th of July
23 = ???
AZ = 69-82 Corvette 1/2" offset
Blown 70 Dec 13th, 05, 1:19 PM The tire size combo on this thread has been VERY helpful !!!
This is almost the exact same wheel set up I am looking to get.
A guy in town will sell me the wheels = $40 ea (8" & 7"), Caps = $20 ea, rings = $15 ea. (Correct rings for the 8"s)
So $300 for the set, seems like a pretty good deal to me, What do these normally sell for nowadays ???
(I have no idea if they are repro, or orig, and I dont really care anyway, my car is not a restoration)
What I was kinda wondering is has anybody used the "shorter caps", I am not sure of the name used for them ?
They look the same but the center is not so tall.
(We used to call the tall ones "Sombreros" and sometimes "Bonnets")
Fat Rat Dec 13th, 05, 4:13 PM I am stuck in old school too. I just set up my 70 Chevelle with centerline auto drags on all corners.. 15x8.5 and E/T streets and 15x5.5 in the front with Mickey Thompson frontrunners. I am very pleased with the look. Right now it is in pieces... having the whole rear suspension replaced with new goodies.. Global West lowers,, Hotchkiss adjustable uppers,and rear springs. Comp. eng. shocks and new 3.73 gears for the 12 bolt.
Jim Mac Dec 13th, 05, 9:28 PM blown70 isn't the short one the disc brake centercaps? Im running 7 and 8 ralleys on my 70 with 275 60 15 on backs and 205 75 15 fronts. got weld street stars, 7 and 8s on the camaro, and got od school center lines just 8.5s now looking for 15x5 or 6 for the fronts and that way I can mix them up when I get bored.
Jim
Blown 70 Dec 14th, 05, 4:06 PM Yep, the short ones were mainly for disc brakes, and many of them say "Disk Brakes" on them, but there were also other short ones that just said "General motors" I checked the "Bay" and both styles are are readily available as repro's.
I'll try to find some good ones at the next local car swap meet, probably sell the Weld wheels that were on it there also 10"s & 6"s
(you know the saying "one mans junk...etc")
I also found out the slang term for the short ones is "Flat Caps"
(So I can add that to all the other usleless information and trivia I have stored away :hurray: )
Skier_Bob Dec 14th, 05, 5:11 PM i like my 295/50/15s on the back of my 71 with deep dish SS cragars. still not wide enough for me though, but very close. thinking about mickey t's some day - but not too big that i have to tub the wheel wells
