Woman arrested for having crowded car

May 24, 2005 (NEWHALL, Calif.) — A woman was arrested after the California Highway Patrol officer who pulled her car over found nine people crammed inside, including two children in the trunk.

"I have never heard of this," said Officer Wendy Hahn. "There was no room left in the car, so she puts two of the kids in the trunk. We're trying to get people to buckle up, and this is what we find."

Lavern Dunlap, 35, of Glendora, was pulled over about 8 p.m. Friday after another driver reported seeing a woman closing the trunk of her Toyota Corolla with two children inside as the vehicle sat parked on a shoulder.

Dunlap told the officer she was heading to her sister's house in Palmdale, about a 60-mile trip.

The officer discovered a 15-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl in the trunk, four children in the back seat, an adult in the front passenger seat with a child on her lap and Dunlap behind the wheel. No one was wearing a seat belt, she said.

Dunlap was booked on suspicion of child cruelty and was released. She is scheduled to appear next month in court. <end>

When I was in high school a buddy of mine had an 81 Cutlass that we used to pick everyone up from school with. At one time we crammed 9 people in this 2 door T top car.

But we never put anyone in the trunk. :)

Yeah, but you were skinny in high school.
You probably had room for 4 more if you wanted. ;)

There's always room, if they're female...

When I stopped at Burger King the other day, I saw 5 guys in the 350 lbs range squeezing themselves into a Corolla. Even if you shouldn't really laugh at this, it was funny to watch the procedure, but even funnier to see the car dragging the muffler when they hit a tiny bump on their way out. Talk about lowrider :D

It's even worse that that lady is from Glendora. Just about a month ago two Freshmen from Glendora high died when the car they were in hit a pole and they were thrown from the trunk into the path of oncomming traffic. I guess if your kids lives arn't valuable then pack em in like luggage.

Geez, they fit nine in that car? I wonder how many we'll be able to fit in our '67 Continental when it's done (the trunk alone could fit 9 bodies....er, people ;))

Thats nuttin. Out in the valley during early morning commutes I often see 7, 8, 9 people stuffed into ESCB Chevy trucks. Seems some of these folks live and work together and thrown down on one vehicle to get to the fields to work or they get picked up by business owners and stuffed in vehicles.

I would like to be at one of the harvesting areas one morning just to see what it looks like. 5 cars pull up and out jumps 45 people. They get pretty tricky and i'll bet that some, do indeed, ride "trunk" on their way to work.

Once in High school we stuffed 3 guys and 5 girls into my pinto it was a 71 did not have the hatch back so we were very snugg. I had to have one girl shift for me and cutting donuts in the parking lot seemed like a good idea untill the screaming started and people wedged all to one side making steering even harder. It was fun while it lasted. We all lived and if my kid ever does anything like that why I'll................LOL

We were medium built, but trust me having 9 people in the car was not easy...I think we had one or two females. There was really no room as it was.
