: Repro fenders / wheelwells = ungood combo... how do I fit these?
crakarjax May 26th, 05, 1:59 AM I got some new wheelwells and fenders, and right now I am trying to bolt them up. I can't even come close to getting the bolts in!! It seems like I can get two or three bolts going in various places, but then everything else is about a centimeter off. In fact, the holes line up a centimeter let on one side of the fender and a centimeter right on the other side. To top it all off, although fender holes by the cowl are a bit big to allow for adjustments, they are placed so that the fender will only go on in one fixed position, ie it is locked into place and can;t be adjusted.
What the he11 is going on? $250 a piece for fenders that should be thrown in the garbage.
Anyway, how shoul I go about getting this stuff to fit? I have considered drilling new holes that line up, but if you all have any better suggestions I am all ears.
ACES-70 May 26th, 05, 6:26 AM Thats the case with most the stuff these days, cut off wheel, honing tool, and a pry bar, I just put in a set of the plastic inner fenders in the 72 car, took 3 hours a side and a whole lot of trimming patients is the key, wish I had better news, and alittle more patients,,, stay after it one hole atta time,, and keep smilein :)
Send the POS back to who you bought it from and get your money back. I wouldn't pay $250 for a defective part and keep it.

Yeah, I am pretty sure this is the case. I am a little perturbed though, because the guy I bought these from said all sheetmetal is from the same plant in taiwan... this was his response when I asked if he recommended I go with goodmark metal. He has been in the business for a long long time so I am not sure if he is telling the truth but damn, I know it couldn't be this bad from the factory! It would have taken days to make one car!
pmullaly May 27th, 05, 12:01 PM The problem stems from the Dies they use to stamp out the parts. GM quit using the dies over 30 years ago! I cant even begin to contemplate how many Stampings have been performed since then. each time those dies come together they hammer into eachother with a force of about 3 tons. You'ld be pretty worn out too after that many years of hammering.
I fit a set of inner WW's in my elky 3 years ago it was a major pain. & I still have a tire rub when I hit dip and big gaps at the WW to fender fit.
All I can reccommend is Hammer Time
TSN100 May 27th, 05, 9:32 PM I was in the same boat on my 70. I was even told the same story, that all fenders were the same. Tried punching the holes larger on the rear of the fenders, and was able to get them pretty close. Then found out the door gap was perfect at the top and bottom. but the middle was about 3/8 to 7/16 wide on both fenders. Ended up buying goodmarks. Nice fit, with no extra work. and the quality was much better! Not perfect, they still had a couple of dings, But nowhere near as frustrating. Now I have an extra set of dynacorns, that will end up being expensive patch metal for other projects!

I think it must be a mith about using GM dies. I bet they just bought the rights to stamp GM panles and have new presses.
Mine fit really well on my 72. Take your time. Don't tighten any bolts til they are all in a few threads. I used longer bolts (temporary) that come up through the WW into the hinge area of the fender that helped me. Then after I got the rest started I replaced them with fender bolts. Take your time they will go.

Now you tell me! I just bent my fender pushing on it to get the inner WW to lign up with the fender. It didn't crease and I was able to push most of it out with some light pressure inside the fender, but it was a close call. A little too close if you ask me... I guess that's what hapens when you try to work on things that require patience at 2 in the morning.
Anyways, the dynacorns seem t obe working out after much effort. They seem to lign up with the doors nicely, but the header panel is sitting a little too low. I still have some holes I can't get bolts through, but I think I will invest in those long bolts, it makes sense and will probably sve me a ton of time. I am going to have to take these off again to paint the insides of the fenders, (bummer) so hopefully they will go on a little easier after the first time. I am kinda wishing I had taken my old fenders to a bodyshop now, but with new WW's they probably would have been just as hard to fit.
pmullaly May 28th, 05, 6:20 PM I'm not saying they wont go ... its just that after all that time i spent hanging the inners 3 or 4 bolt holes were way off and there is at least a 1/2 inch gap between the outer edge of the WW and the fender, this is at the rear of the wheel well arch. the only way to reduce that gap would be to stretch the inner WW material.
Right now I'm praying for an insured motorist to wipe out my front clip
crakarjax May 28th, 05, 11:22 PM Fear not.. I figured out how to sort of easily amend the situation between
WWs and fenders. The trick is, you just have to take a good look first, then take the fender off and bend down the lip around the WW in the right places. This gets rid of that 1/2" inch gap, and if for instance you bend in the front, it will push the rear holes closer to lign them up. Still a pain in the butt but better than stretching metal for sure! Maybe it can even be done with the fenders mounted?
