You could get the following engines in an SS:

L65 350 245HP@4800 350lbs@2800RPM
L48 350 270HP@4800 360lbs@3200RPM
LS3 402 300HP@4800 400lbs@3200RPM
LS5 454 365HP@4800 465lbs@3200RPM

All were 8.5 compression. Some sorces say they built a few LS6 425HP 454s but many also say they did not.

My owners manual for my 71 says there was an LS-6 that had 425 HP and 500ft/lb of torque. I have a Haynes repair manual for 69-888 chevelles that confimrs this

The LS6 is shown in my GM resto guide but many a book says there were none of these.

I just received from GM an info package on the 71 chevelles, it does list an LS6 being available in 71. However as said before, I have been told that engine factory records show none were built for production. The 71 sales brochure does not mention the 450 hp LS6, it only offers up the 365 hp LS5. This is still somewhat of a mystery, although I would not buy a 71 from a guy saying its a 71 LS6 (99.9% chance its not) ...just my .02.
