: Will a 67 sterring wheel work on a 66?

The reason I ask is when i bought my 66 basket case project, it came in many boxes. It came with a decent 67 SS steering wheel on the colum, now trying to install the colum in seems a bit short when bolted to the box. With the wheel off the shaft it seems proper on the rag joint, but to shallow in the colum to catch any splines.

I did replace the bottom bearing, the top bearing seemed fine so i left the top in place.

I beleave the colum to be a 66, from the 66 chevelle assembly manuel pics.

When i bought the car there was no steering box and the colum was in one of the many boxes.

Thanks Bob Adamsky

Yes, it will work. I have a 67 wheel on my 66SS. However the steering columns are not interchangable.

Thanks for the quick reply Chris
Any idea on why it might seem to short?

Bob,

with the 66 column, the inner shaft is free to slide in and out of the outer column... Sounds to me like the outer portion of the column just needs to be slid toward the firewall a bit... You only need to loosen the 2 large nuts under the dash, and then the outer portion should be able to be slid up or down, as needed... You don't need to touch the rag-joint coupler, just leave it connected...

This should get you more spline length at the top for the wheel...

The support strap (held by those 2 large nuts) should actually have a small tang that fits in a small notch in the outer column (going from memory here) for proper placement.

BTW, I didn't think a 67 wheel will work/look correct... It should function okay, but isn't the center of the wheel a larger outside diameter than the 66 wheel center (and 66 column)... I know the 67 column is bigger diameter at the top compared to a 66... Same goes for the strap and the dash itself...

Tony thanks for your response and help. Yes, there is a small notch on the colum that the bracket fits into. Going off memory, the notch will put the colum in only at one place( height ).The 67 wheel seems to be the same size as the colum on top, but in fits the dash on the bottom, which made me beleave that it is a 66 colum.

While the 67SS wheel is very nice, it is there untill i start the interior redo than will be replaced with a 66 wheel.
