I'm restoring my engine compartment and smoothed my firewall/cowl with sikkens Poly. I then layed a sandless primer. I used Rustolum semi-gloss enamel (mistake) and it crinkled all over. I had to bring the inner fenders down to bare metal. The firewall I sanded back down until I started hiting filler. I then used a different filler/primer (Krylon) and used Krylon rust tough enamel semi-flat.
It laid beatifully, except one small spot on my firewall continues to crinkle, I sand the paint layer smooth, repaint, and it crinkles. I've done this four times.
I have my block painted, my inner fenders look great, and I realy don't want to bring the whole thing down to bare again.
Any ideas or sugestions?

Did you try cleaning the area with wax and grease remover first?

I had read somewhere that Rustolium paints used fish oil as an ingredient, making them VERY unsuitable for automotive use. Try using a good grease/wax remover and see what happens. It may take several applications of the grease/wax remover to do the job.

Look up MARTINSR on the member area he can probably tell you whats going on.
I know if youve got oil, grease or silicone contamination youll get fisheyes.
Sounds like your laying down two incompatible types of paint I beleive you can put a acrylic over a enamel but not vise versa or do I have that backwards?? I cant remember but I've seen the results and it sounds like what you're experiencing

You probally have a sand thru , you have sanded thru the top coat and when you spraye new paint the solvents in the paint are too hot causing the borders to lift . Try to apply very light coats , very very light, alow to dry between coats then the area should take paint . I try not use spray cans cans because of this problem It is better to buy paint and flatten your self, be sure you use compatible products

Thanks guys. I sanded down the area again and took a strong laquer thinner and wiped it down. The only problem now being the laquer bit into the paint and I left drag marks with the rag thats visable thru the topcoat. I'll have to let the area fully cure then finish sand and shoot again once the temp warms up a little.
Overspray got onto my cowl so I dusted the area to blend it in and got small areas of crinkle where there wasn't a previous problem. I'm pretty sure temperatures coming into play as well.
I used to think this was the fun part.
