: Neutral Safety Switch??
Franchise May 19th, 05, 11:33 PM Hey guys,
I just installed a new Neutral safety switch in my 70 SS.
But it still cranks in Drive.
I was told that I have to slide a switch to the front or back????
Is this true??? Is so, what the h*ll do I do?
Thanks,
Franchise
540cutlaSS May 20th, 05, 12:44 AM Mine was self ajusting, but I had to mount it in the nuetral position then move it through the gears. That would break off a plastic pin and the switch would self ajust.
Steve S May 20th, 05, 12:51 AM The mounting tabs on the switch are slotted and can the switch can be adjusted for proper operation. Lossen the mounting screws and move the swith forward or backword to get the result.
Franchise May 20th, 05, 2:34 PM OK ....I assume you are talking about the plastic switch under the device...it is like a white plastic. I will adjust it forward to park then.
Thanks for the info.

Does that white plastic tab have to be in the hole of the shifter?????????????
Does the plastic tab and shifter move into the same gears?????????
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Franchise
540cutlaSS May 25th, 05, 1:21 PM There is a piece of plastic below the SW. It go's into the rectaingle recepticle on the shifter. Then screw mounts down. If it is a new SW it might install in the neutral position (mine did).
Franchise May 25th, 05, 1:23 PM So I should just slip it in neutral and fasten the bolts.....
I thought I did it that way.....
Do I need to break anything off??????
Jim Mac May 25th, 05, 2:12 PM I think your describing the ignition switch, Isn't the neutral safety switch the 1/4 moon shaped switch that screws to the bottom of the column? kind of like a upside down smiley face, when thats adjusted properly it will only start in park and neutral Jim
Dean May 26th, 05, 3:10 PM Looks like this ?
Franchise May 26th, 05, 9:43 PM Yeah...that is it! (but the brackets for mounting are straight not angled...no biggee)
So, WTF do I do?
I had the key in, not to the crank/ignition, put the car in neutral and it started cranking instantly??!!?!?!?!?!????
What do I need to do?????
Jim Mac May 26th, 05, 10:27 PM I'm confused, let me get this straight, you installed the switch but it cranks with the key in the on position, did you move the ignition switch? that could be out of adjustment, the tabs on the neutral sw. should look like the pictures or else how do you mount it to the column?, I just put my shifter in park move the tab to the left, brass terminals facing back of the car, install 2 screws that should do it, the ignition switch just moves up and down the column make sure the rod falls in the hole, Jim
540cutlaSS May 27th, 05, 12:35 AM Yeah...that is it! (but the brackets for mounting are straight not angled...no biggee)

Your switch mounting tabs are inline with the body of the switch because you have a floor shift. Column shifts look like the one pictured.
I'm alittle confused to. Did you put in a new ingnition switch also or ajust it remove it or anything.
Franchise May 27th, 05, 2:39 PM Did nothing to it. I had a NSS in there, but it would shut on and off....not allowing me to start it or get any response from the ignition at all. did nothing to the ignition or switch previously. Did jump the old NSS with a wire before.
So I ordered a new one from OPGI and I disconnected everything, removed the 2 screws, pulled it out, and placed the new one in, put 2 screws back and connected everything back up.
I did place the plastic tab in the hold for the shifter mount, but the ONLY thing would be that I put it back in with it in Park, instead of neutral.

So my problem is....car cranks in neutral with the key in the ON position.???
************************************************** ********
Also, I can switch gears in the car without having a key in?? No response, just switching....could this be a problem????
Dean May 27th, 05, 2:45 PM How many wires on the switch?
wondering if you might possibly be sending backup light switch power to the starter.
Franchise May 27th, 05, 2:55 PM Have 4 total.
The switch setup looks like this:
______ ______ ______
______
with four wires setup, 2 purple on the dual 2 in front, and I think a blue and black? (not really sure here)
What color order do they have to be in?
Dean May 27th, 05, 5:21 PM Can't remember the order off the top of my head but kinda sounds like the wires are on correctly.
If you pull off one of the purple wires, does it stop the starter?
There is only one wire that goes from the NSS to the starter's "S" terminal so that purple wire has to be getting power from somewhere.
If it's source is the NSS, then the incoming purple/white wire is getting power from somewhere when the ignition switch is NOT in it's "starting" position or the wrong wire is on the incoming side of that section of the NSS.
Bad ignition switch maybe ?
Franchise May 27th, 05, 9:38 PM What? the actual switch on the column??
I will check the others for voltage tomorrow.
Thanks,
Franchise
Glenn May 29th, 05, 5:59 PM I used a electric meter to measure the continuity between the stabs on the NSS while sliding the switch back and forth (with the shifter in park and again in neutral). You should have continuity between the two stabs that the purple wires goto when in park or neutral, and continuity between the other two stabs when the shifter is in reverse (back up lights).
Franchise May 29th, 05, 8:56 PM OK. I checked the purple w/white and it passed the test, only power when key turns to crank. So ignition is good.
The other two wires are a dark green/turquoise and a light green.
Test Results:
1) Only one has power when the key is turned on. (forget which one)
2) With purples only attached, starts in P only. None others. -only ONCE in N.
3) when attach one of two, switching on each, car will crank in Reverse.
What do you mean continuity????
---Like 12V power to them. Am I supposed to have 12V from BOTH stabs together when in Reverse (with key ON position?)
...do both control R lights???
