Boy what a pain to get off the chrome trim on the bed of an el camino. I have been trying for several hours not to damage the trim that goes around the bed, but I am having a tuff time. I reached under the trim pieces via the access panels on the side walls and did not feel anything up there that would lead me to believe it's fastened by anything. I would appreciate any help on this one. thanks in advance- Dino

The side pieces are held on by clips, just like the trim around the windshields. Spend $5 on a trim removal tool, it'll be well worth the money. I believe the only pieces that I had to reach up inside for were the rear corner pieces which had speed nuts on them.

The rear cast trim piece is held by 3 or 4 nuts that you can reach thru the inside panel. Remove them & you should be able to pull the cast piece off. Then the side rails will slide back and off.

Another way to get the side rails off of a '72 El Camino is to grip your hands over the piece of trim, push in (towards the bed) and at the same time curl the tips of your fingers up. This has gottne it off for me in the past. just be careful, the last clip on the ends towards the tail gate is a very special looking clip that breaks all to easily. I couldn't find them anywhere so I had to get mine welded.
