Lets do a little math... I'll estimate "low" compared to what I've seen sell, assuming the quality is above average...

solid 69 camaro body $8,000+
Quality paint-job from reputable shop $8,000+
69 427 running engine $3,000+
camaro 12-bolt $1,000+ (bare housing)
Disc Brakes $500 complete

I come up with $20,500 just for the basics, not to mention all the little stuff that adds up to a few thousand. Sure you could build it for less if you did the work yourself, and found some really sweet deals along the way...

If nobody was making money off this hobby, do you think there'd be any parts available?

You make some good points...still hurts to see that price though.

I've also heard you never get the money you put in to a car back when you sell it.
I mean come on if it were a real yenko then yeah I would say it would be worht it. But just because some used car dealer puts a price tag on it doesn't make it worth it. You would have to believe he didn;t put that much money into it, or pay half of that for it.

That dealer is a trip! He pulled a deal over on the PY Pontiac board where he came on the board, asked posters what they thought about a certain Pontiac he had for sale, acting like he was considering buying it when he was actually the seller. When he got called out on it he became a big a$$hole about the whole deal. No one over there would EVER buy anything from him.

Could be true, but when I look at the pics, I don't really get the impression that it's a serious restoration. I don't know if it's the low resolution, but it just doesn't look right, there's overspray on the subframe and in the wheel wells, the remains of the interior is still in the car etc. Looks like it could just as well be a Bondo bucket waiting for someone to grab a can of flat black to "detail" it and get it on the market again... So just as a contrast, assuming the quality is below average:

Not so solid 69 camaro body: $1,500
Quickie Bondo-and-paint-job by local talent: $1,000
Any old BB truck engine, dressed up as a 427: $500
camaro 12-bolt: $1,000+ (alright, I'll give you that one)
Disc Brakes: $12 (Got lucky, only had to change pads).
Total: $4,012

The only way to find out would be to go and look at it. I really hope the buyer will do that before paying, 'cause I know that some people are making money off this hobby.

I have to disagree with dereks pricing. 12 bolts are NOT $1k for a bare housing. Disc brakes can be had for $250. I have plenty of reputable paint guys around me that can paint cars for under $5k. That car is over priced. My 69 RS/SS will be a BBC /TKO powered machine and I'll have less than 20k in it. I even over paid for the initial car.

The car above was probably done for less than 10k.
$4k for an average rolling 69 (with discs) (didn't say how long they have had it could have been less)
$500 paint job(done by the dealer) and $500 stripes (if that much)
<$500 12 bolt (probably yanked from another dealer car and 10 bolt swapped in.
<$1500 junkyard 454 (better check closely ;) ) and $300 th400

$7300.

Hey dealers are in it for the money so if somebody ponys up 20 large it's their own dang fault :) . If they do, they probably will need another 20 large to get it done for them as they aren't very smart :D

I'd like to know where you guys are finding your $1500 and $4000 '69 camaros!

I've wanted one for a while, but can't seem to find a decent roller for less than $8,000... maybe prices are just inflated around here because there are so few solid ones???

"Founded in 2002, USA Classic Cars is conveniently located within the Los Angeles County area of the San Fernando Valley."

So why don't you drive over there with a camara and take some photos?

I had the chance to buy a '69 Camaro base model coupe a few years ago...it was (from what I was told) a one owner car, they had just painted it purple and it had a fiberglass cowl induction hood, however it still had the original inline 6/powerglide in it along with the same stock worn and torn interior with column shift. The asking price: $3500.

I passed on it because I wasn't impressed with the paint on it and the interior but now I wished I would've jumped on it.

How times have changed in just 10 years. Before I got my 66. I looked at 3 or 4 69 Camaros. They were all great restoration projects and all were under 3 grand. They were all a tad over my head at the time so I passed. Wonder where those cars are today.

Honesty, it may be an average price thats not too over the top if its as nice as they say it is. But I would just have trouble buying a clone for that kind of cash. I would rather take 20K, and use a good 69 project making into a custom big block street machine that is personalized to my taste. Just like most other resto-rod 69s out there.

Why would you do all that work on the body and engine and still not have touched the interior?Looks fishey to me and I'm far from being an expert!!I say its a paint job and nothing more. But seeing crap like this does drive the value of all of our cars up so I guess that is a plus side!Still $20,000 to spend on that car!

You forgot to add in the cost of travel for us guys in the rust belt to look at it (or pay a reputable service to check it out), and the cost to haul a desert car back east.

Hey, he's a dealer. Negotiate.

A friend of mine had a -69. I never looked at it, but it was his former race car, with descent body (minor rust, no major mods, but I think it had fiberglass up front) complete half descent interior but some front suspension damage from a wheelie. He was asking $1,000 w/o motor and transmission, but with a 4.11 12-bolt posi. This was a couple of years ago and as far as I know, no one bought it. He might still have it... maybe it's time to call him and offer $500 :)

I'll see if I can locate the guy. Haven't seen him in a while, and last time I did he was starting a new job, moving out of town etc. I'll see what I can do. I know where there is another Camaro (67 or 68) but it's pretty rough (cheap?). I can look into that too if your'e interested.

there is a 69 z-28 listed locally here in western pa. all the "hard" work has been done with new panels etc. Is a rolling chassis that needs painted and put back together. Asking price is $10k. Has the original 302 dz motor. I think I was told the tranny is correct for the year but not original equipment. Rear end is original to the car.

1967 Malibu California Black Plate with PROTECTOPLATE, # matching 327/275, Powerglide, Power Steering, Power Brakes, currently under restoration should be finished by 5/25/05, New Marina Blue Paint on a rust free orig paint body, New Bright Blue Interior, New 15" Rallies with New Tires, New Chrome Bumpers and Badges, New Flowmasters, Excellent Floors and Trunk, Super Nice Survivor Chevelle... Absolute Classic Cars

Dealer ad from our TC classifieds today...

I started to laugh, who would consider this a "survivor"???? I thought a "survivor" was mostly original and NOT restored (besides, aren't "survivors" only Corvettes? :p )?

And then I realized, just some "dealer" out to screw somebody by throwing around buzzwords...

I actually checked this place out when I was looking to buy my chevelle. They had a 65 convertible 4spd SS for something like $13k. It was above my price range but since it was local I decided to take a look at what a $13k car looks like. It had rust everywhere and a 283 where a 327 should have been. I can't believe what this guy tries to get away with. I guess if there's anywhere where people have more money than sense it's LA.

--rO

P.S. - Damn I wish I could have found a covertible 4sp in good shape and in my price range! Now it seems like that will never happen. Even in the 2 short years I've had my hard top prices seem to have gone through the roof.
