: Blotchy Paint Job

I had a friend of mine paint my car a few days ago and it came out really blotchy. There are some areas that look like they have been painted more than others. I asked him what was wrong and he said it just needs a little wetsanding and buffing and it will go away. I this true. And if it is how long should I wait to buff it?

What type and color of paint?

Its black paint. Im not sure of the type, I know its the cheapest kind of paint that I could get. I just wanted a temporary paint job until I get more money because im only 16. I know its PPG paint that the clearcoat is already mixed in it.

If this is a straight black non metalic color then what you're seeing is probably dry spots where less paint was applied. If your painter put enough paint on you should be able to colorsand and buff it smooth. When you're describing cheap PPG I'm guessing this is OMNI MTK single stage urethane and hopefully not enamel. How much paint was applied? Was it MTK? If your painter is knowlegable he should be able to show you how to colorsand and buff, otherwise do a search here. You can make MTK look alright but it isn't all that durable and with black you'll notice fine surface scratches after washings. Another option for more durability would be to wetsand the complete car with 800 till smooth then apply some MC260 clearcoat--if it was painted with MTK. Bob

As Bob said MTK is not very durable. Buffing black MTK is a real PITA. You can cut with 800 and then apply some clear over it. I would cut with 800 and let it SIT for a day or two. This will allow that MTK to breathe, helping those solvents escape.

MTK seems like it takes its sweet time to "AIR" out and if you sand with 800 and clear in the same day right after getting sprayed with MTK you are looking for problems

Its straight black enamel. Im not sure if it was omni or MTK. A gallon of paint was put on the car. Ill have to ask if it was omni or mtk. Ill probably end up sanding and buffing.Any more advice would be apprecaited. Thanks.

Hopefully he put a hardener in with the enamel or you can forget sanding it. If there is a hardener the enamel can be cut and buffed to look very nice as long as there is enough paint on the car. Do a search on wetsanding or buffing and you will find lots of info.

Will your painter guide you through the wetsanding and buffing process? That would be the best way for you to learn this.
