Hey folks, I got a wild hair today. My Chevelle has alot of rust. Would be cheaper to back half it and tub it. What kind of price am I looking at to do something like this guy did. Just the rear half of the car.

Check it out: http://www.prostreetcar.com/69_malibu.html

I just want to tub the wheel wells, narrow the rear frame for a 4 link. Maybe a 4 link. Anyway lets say to do what he has on this sit. Just the back half.

Thanlks.

just make sure when you tub it that you stretch the rear wheel openings so the rear tires can come all the way out to the edge of the wheel lip. i've seen a lot of 68 and 69s where they put 32 inch tires under them with the stock wheel opening. this looks like a$$. it makes the track of the rear tires a lot norrower than the front tires.

So do you just shave the wheel well opening? or what? Cut out the material?

you have to cut the entire wheel opening out of the quarter panels and add a piece about two inches long or so. to stretch it out so the tire will come all the way out to the wheel lip. if you don't do this there isn't enough room between the front and back edges of the wheel opening for a tall tire. thats why you see some of the cars with the back tires way up under the car. because they didn't want to stretch the opening. these cars look just plain ol stupid.

you can either buy an aftermarket wheelwell patch panel to get the extra piece or just make a couple of pieces.

the hardest part is getting the lips back in at the same height and shape on both sides. its not real hard you just have to take your time and make careful measurements.

what i do is tie one end of a piece of string to a scripe and the other end to a screwdriver or something similar. making the distance between the two about 3 inches or so. then run the screwdriver along the edge of the stock opening while you scribe a line about 3 inches above that with the scripe. (this may take 2 people) that way you can cut both sides out even.

after that figure out how wide the opening needs to be and cut that amount out of the new opening you have made. making sure to cut the same amount away from the front and back. you don't need to make the opening any taller just wider. you can use the piece you cut out as a template to cut the new opening out. just cut it in two pieces. and sotra overlap it over the new opening and mark around it. after you get the opening wide enough just weld the two pieces back. then you will have a gap left where you will have to put your extra piece in. just make sure you make both sides back in the same.

this may sound complicated but its not really very hard you can do both sides in a day. and the result will be a much better looking car.

hope this helps,

mike

But when I do this will I still have that awsome aggressive look of "tucking" my tires?

go to the race track and look at a few chevelles you will see the ones i'm talking about. my personal opinion is they look funny with the rear tires way up under the car. unless you figure out a way to move the front tires in.

the ones that have the rear tires all the way out look a lot better. but thats just my opinion.

I like the prostreet look with the wheels up under the car, so that the car stays basically level. I agree that making the rear track narrow looks terrible, I would rather drop the suspension to get the wheel off and keep the correct look. I have to do that with my 55 mostly because of the stock factory quarter design which has a very low body opening. You dont have to use the 31" tires either, mine on the 55 are 29.5 high and 17" wide so they dont jack the rear of the car sky high. See if you can find a used narrowed rear with the correct width and if possible used rear wheels and tires before you even start. New stuff isnt cheap.

I found the rear wheels, they are 29.5. Don't know where to look for a narrowed rear. Not sure if I want a ford 9 inch or a dana 60.
