Got the paint stripped off the roof and found about 1/2 inch of filler. Roof has some rust and about 25% seems to be streched with a oil can pop to it. Looks like someone sat on it. A friend checking a salvage yard out in dry west Texas for a donor roof skin. Is this the way I should go or can this roof be repaired? If so, how?
Thanks for the advice,

What year? Dynacorn just came out with a roof skin for 68-72 elky's. Your best bet might be another donor skin the top, and then tack weld in place.
I'm debating the same for mine too.

I have a decent roof for a 68, if you or anyone needs it. It is pretty clean with no rot that I can see. Send me a private message if you are interested.

Oh sorry, it's a 71 Chevelle 2 door. Friend found a 72 Olds Cutlass with a good roof. Very straight, no rust, still has the glass, decent paint and maganet sticks all over except for the lead seam. Yard wants $50 for it. $100 if they cut it off. Is this a fair price? Will the roof skin off a 72 Cutlass fit a 71 Chevelle?
Caru68, Thanks for the offer. I'll defintely keep it in mind but I'm looking for one close enough to avoid shipping cost. Thanks again.

Skin it!
A roof skin from a 68-72 a-body will interchange. Just the outer skin, not the entire roof however.

I remember an old Car Craft showed someone make an El Camino into a convertable by cutting the top off to replace with a donor. Seemed a bit extreme to me. Skinning seems like a much better approach to keeping the internal structural integrity of the posts.

I'm going to end up junking the roof with the rest of the rotted body, so if you or anybody else needs it, just let me know and I'll let it go for cheap $$. I'd give it away, but it will take a little time to cut off without completely hacking it. Your shipping would probably be more that what I would charge for it. I'm not trying to advertise in the Body Section, as it just came up in the post and seemed pertinent, for all those who are worrying about it (Mods).
