..what do you guys used to lube up the rod and main bearings before you put the crank in the engine and the rods on the crank?

Also do you lube up your oil pumps before you assemble them into the block?

Clevite Bearing Guard is my favorite but Red Line assembly lube, oil, it all works just fine on the bearings.
You do not need some thick crap on the bearings.
I never use Moly paste or the thick white stuff what ever it's called.
Don't care what the adds say, I don't like it.
I normally just oil the pump & put it together after checking clearances.

You are going to prime the engine anyway correct??
So,,, having some thick non flowing hole plugging crap on the bearings "because it doesn't run off",, or for "long term protection" as the adds tend to say, doesn't make a lot of sense,, at least to me :(
I also always add a bottle of GM EOS or Crane break-in concentrate to the oil before priming.

I concur (I always do with Mike). I use Redline and a bottle of GM EOS. It's the best way to go I think.

What about lithum grease? Do you guys ever used that stuff? Or is that the "thick white stuff" you're referring to?

If it's thick I don't use it, don't care what it's called & I'd assume if it's grease it's thick.
Lot's of good assembly LUBES out there that don't come out like silly putty. or tooth paste :(
Clevite bearing guard, the red stuff Comp calls cam lube, lot's of others.
Thickest stuff I use except on cam journals & the bottoms of lifters is Red line but I don't even use it anymore on bearings.
I use Valco's spray lube on piston pins, springs, rockers, chains, etc as it comes out real thin & "runs" into the needles, rollers etc before it "sets" up to something a little tackier & is damn near impossible to get off,, good stuff & it has Torco MPZ in it which is a real good hi pressure lube.
