: Windows DON'T roll up straight!?!

hey guys,

During the restoration of my 70 Chevelle, we took out the window glass during the painting.

Now, that it is all together...the windows do not roll up straight....they seem to be in the correct position. I was told that there is a screw to tighten to adjust the angle....is this true? and if so, which one?

Anyone ever have this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

There are roughly eight adjustments per window to align them. a "Body by Fisher" manual explains the adjustment process. All your nylon rollers need to be in good shape also. Try to return the adjustments to their stock positions first to get them closer.

Hey 67shovel,

I have 2 manuals...one factory assembly and the other service manual. I dont seem to find much in those....where would you start....???? Could you possibly explain it, since I dont think I have that manual.

With the window rolled all the way down?? or start at the top??

Could I adjust it with the window still in....or do I need to remove it?

Thanks for the great advice...let me know if you can.

It's the "Body by Fisher" manual that spells this out. Hardtop & convertible door windows have two stops on the bottom and two stops on the top. These control the final resting position of the window when it's up or down. Each has a little shoe and one bolt holding it in a slot on the door. Then you have two vertical channels that the window rollers are slid into when you install the glass. The adjustments on those are confusing. Each channel has a lock NUT that holds the adjustment on the channel adjustment screw. You loosen the lock nut and get a screwdriver to turn the adjusting screw while the window is in the up position and observe which way the window moves. They have these adjustments on the top and bottom of the vertical channel. These are adjusted when the car left the factory and that is usually where you want them again. Play detective and examine the adjusting screws to try and return them to their original positions. If you can't you'll have to play with them till they're right. There is also a horizontal track in the middle of the door. You can rock the glass back and forth when that adjustment is loose. Again, there should be signs (dimples in the sheet metal) where it was set at, put it back there.
So, first adjust you vertical channels, then your horizontal one. then your top stops and finally, your bottom stops. Now you are ready to tackle the rear quarter windows. These differ a little from the door windows but you should be able to reconize what adjustments your looking at now and get those right. If your nylon rollers are shot, you are fighting a loosing battle till you fix those first. I self taught myself this stuff so this procedure may differ from the factory manuals instructions.
Good luck,
Roger

I had a terrible time adjusting the side windows on my Camaro, until I bought the Fisher body manual. The whole procedure HAS to be done in the correct order, and it's all described in the book. Just get it, it's very useful.
