: Do I need to bore the engine?

Early this week I took my bare ZZ4 (350 sbc) engine block to the machine shop to be jet washed and have the cylinders honed. I am having this done because my aluminum heads eroded away around the water ports and filled a couple cylinders with water.

While at the shop, after honing the first cylinder he noticed the top of the bores were .005 over standard bore. He stopped, called me and reccomended that I bore the cylinders to .030 over.
This would mean I have to buy new pistons, and have them pressed on the rods. Basically it adds almost 700 bucks to the cost.

Should I bore the cylinders to the 30 over? If not, what are the consequences?

Thanks,

Tim

I'd have him power hone it to .010 and go. If you don't need to cut to .030, don't waste the metal. A lot of manufacturers make .010 over pistons and rings. My .02

Tim,
If it is worn .005, it needs to be bored. Kind of hard to beleive that new of an engine would have that much wear on it unless it has a ton of miles. I dont know of anyone making .010 oversize pistons for that engine, but there are .020's. Cost is going to be the same either way. Do it right the first time, you will be better off in the long run.

The engine is about 5 years old. It has I would guess 50,000 miles at most. About 5000 of those with a supercharger at 5 psi boost. Other than that it has been mostly for daily driving. I ordered some sealed power forged pistons for it already. I just wanted to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Thanks,

Tim
