: Paint before windshield installation?

I was planning to paint the glass mounting surface before they install the windshield.

The windshield guy suggested I have the glass installed before painting.

This doesn't really make sense to me. Wouldn't the bare metal be subject to rust if it isn't painted first? Or would the paint mess up the seal of the glass?

I would think you'd want it painted first too. Maybe he'd concerned how well the paint will adhere to the metal and that the windshield adhesive may leak if the adhesive pulls the paint off the metal.

Or maybe he thought you meant "paint the entire car first"? Maybe he didn't like the idea of installing glass around a fresh paint job and possbily damaging it.

I dunno. I've always painted the window frame first and have had no problems. You do need to allow enough time for the paint to fully cure before installing the glass however.

You'll get the same from the upholstery shops regarding a vinyl top. Bottom line is they don't want to work around a newly painted car.

Paint the car first, put in the windows and vinyl top after the car is painted.

I asked him in more detail. He doesn't mind working around a newly painted car.

It's because he has a special primer/sealer that he'll use to ensure that the adhesive sticks better. I still have to do a little work where there are some rust holes that are too small to patch with steel.

I hope to have the front and rear ready for glass tomorrow evening. This car is my transportation and I can't wait for the entire paint job before the glass goes back in. I got matching paint so I can do the body work a little at a time without the car living in patches of primer.

It's not a show car. It's a work horse.

At a minimum, I'd recommend that you paint the frame area with several coats of DP90. This would seal out any moisture.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and prime and paint the entire area and let it sit for two days before he installs the glass.

After thinking about it further, I seriously doubt that he removes the paint down to bare metal on any windshield replacement jobs. If this doesn't suit him, he can do the job as he would with a car that didn't require any body work. I certainly don't want any moisture-retaining materials under the glass seal.

During the body work phase on mine, I took the windshield and back glass frame areas down to bare metal, POR'd them, then primed with epoxy primer. Primer-surfacer went over that, then new paint. Glass sealant went over new BB/CC paint. No problems.

I'm doing basically what Von did, I'm not taking any chances. I will be putting a vinyl top back on and I want to be sure I have done everthing possible to deter the under top rust problem.
