A picture of a cowl induction hood with the flapper thing has a lot of stuff on the bottom of the hood for the air cleaner to fit it. I have the non cowl hood, can i just cut out a hole for the flap or do i need a new hood?
There were 3 hoods offered on 70-72 chevelles.
The standard flat malibu hood
The SS hood, wich is the cowl style without the flapper,
and the cowl induction hood.
All 3 hoods are different.
although the SS hood and cowl induction hoods appear the same, they are different underneath.

Jeff is right, they are 2 TOTALLY different hoods. The outer hood skins were probably stamped from the same die, but then EVERYTHING else on the under side plus the stamping of the hole for the door is completely different. A reproduction hood is not terribly expensive (less than $300), but there are quite a number of accessory parts to purchase to go along with it. And then on top of that, you have the special air cleaner, vacuum parts, electrical parts, hood pins, etc.
Sometimes at swap meets or here on the For Sale ads you can find really good buys on an original CI Hood. If you really want to have a first class looking CI Hood, the only way to go is to get the correct hood and all related parts. If you try to "add" components to the domed hood, chances are it will look cobbled up and unsightly-----------unless maybe you are a professional sheetmetal worker.
