I have a 72 malibu 350, the tilt steering column has movement up and down even when it's locked in position. I was wonderring if this is a common problem, if i have to replace the whole column or if there is a part that can be replaced. I'd like to know how far I have to dig and what bolts need to be tightened or what part needs to be replaced before I open it up.

If you can locate an exploded view of that tilt steering you may find the part you may need. That would be in the Service Manual. Mine is a 71, and shows innards for tilt steering cloumn.. Springs shafts and all kinds of junk.

Most of the time the screws have just worked themselves loose. You will need to disassemble the column to tighten them.

Here are complete instructions on disassembly and repair of your Saginaw tilt column. The first D&R paper gives some simple tests that you can perform in order to determine where and what your problem is.
