Well i was down in Wildwood NJ for the car show/cruise and they had a dyno setup there and i figured "why not give it a try". So its saturday around 3pm, and he tells me its 3 runs with air/fuel. I pay the man, and he winches my car on the dyno. Well i'm very nervous that i'm going to break something because i just got the new heads on last week, and havent had it up to 7k yet.
Anyway, he give me the signal to start it, and get it in 3rd gear and up to 3000rpms...then he give me the green light to punch it. I do as told and take it to 7k and let off. As its slowing down he looks at me and tells me to shut it down. He tells me it was a 290hp and 145tq. The two guys are messing with the wires at the computer, and the shrug their shoulders and tell me to start it up again. So i do as told and they ask me what i'm ideling at. I tell them, and they tell me to shut it down again. Here my ignition wires are too big for the dyno and they arent reading a correct RPM....:(
So on the second pull i get a 357hp, and 290tq reading and the guy askes me if i sprayed it. I said no, and they continue to be puzzled. On the last pull i get a 410hp and a 353tq reading and he again says its jumping all over the board. Has anyone ever had a problem with a dyno doing this? There was a camaro on it before me and he had no problems at all. I'm actually curious if the 410 is correct or not?!?!?

Don't know what's up with the dyno but those are great numbers...way to go.

The local dyno I use has problems with MSD boxes on some cars... my car included.

When that happens, the only thing they cannot get is an accurate torque reading. If that was in fact your problem, they'll need to plot your HP vs. MPH instead of RPMs. If they were plotting your HP vs. RPMs, the numbers will be off.

P.S, last winter I ditched my MSD setup and went to a DUI HEI. He had no problems at all getting an RPM signal after that. Congrats on the numbers if they were correct though! :)

If your not getting accurate torque readings, then your not getting accurate HP readings either. I wouldn't read too much into the numbers if the dyno was acting up that much. Hope u had some fun at least :)

Yea i had a blast, it was deff a fun weekend.
Should my Tq reading be that much lower than my Hp reading? I mean i figured it would be lower because of my destroked combo and my 200cc Heads that are prolly ported a little too much for my cam/motor combo and losing some low end. But that just seems way lower than what it should be.
All i know is...My lil radical sounding smallblock drew more of a crowd over than the "Big Block" Camaro that was on the dyno before me ;) haha just kidding BB guys. It sounded great tho at 6-7k.

With 13.8:1 compression, and everything else to support that, then 410 n/a rwhp is quite achievable.

However, your results are indeed questionable. The 10.4 mm ignition wires can be a problem for some test equipment

Bring it to another chassis dyno facility and give it a second try.

Or you could make it even more fun by making the dragstrip your dyno - post back with your new e.t./mph.
