1badss396 May 9th, 05, 12:03 PM What is the best gas tank to buy for a 70 chevelle? I dont want a peice of crap. One that is the best for fit and looks. Iam restoring another car and all it really needs is a gas tank and brake lines. Money isnt an issue
Thanks, Brad
I will rephrase the question what is the best gas tank you can buy that is closest to a NOS gas tank so I can still use a NOS gas cap?
ss396boy May 9th, 05, 12:59 PM There were a few people that had custom tanks done that have a sump on them and look nice. Let me find it quick......................
Here is a pic of the custom tank.. Very sweeet.

They are called Rock Valley Antiques. No other info than that.....
Secondly, there are only 2 sources of mass produced tanks that I know of for these older cars, China and Canada. If you want a Canadian made tank, I recently purchased one from gastanks.com a a decent price compared to other sources. For lines, "The Right Stuff" comes highly recommended.
mr 4 speed May 9th, 05, 4:09 PM why not get one from our sponsor,Ground Up www.ss396.com
gigem May 9th, 05, 5:10 PM I bought a new tank w/ filler neck for my 72 from Ground Up. It requires a different cap than the original. Took me forever to figure that out. Got the cap from Ground Up, too. After a month of trying to find one locally. Buy them both together and save youself the hassle.
Hockey8720 May 9th, 05, 5:24 PM Does anyone know how much those rock valley tanks cost?
Try http://www.rickshotrodshop.com/
I purchased a stainless steel tank, like the one pictured above, for about $700 6 months ago. It took about 4 weeks to build and deliver for my 71 El Camino.
I had -10 and -8 females ends added to my tank. Fit, finish, and installation was top notch and easy.
ChevelleCLM May 9th, 05, 7:02 PM How abotu a tank with an EFI sump, or an in tank pump?? are those made reasonably cheap?

It was just a comment meaning "I'm sure he didn't mean it in a derogatory way". Surely enough you can afford it if money is not an issue.
67 GTO May 9th, 05, 10:58 PM You most likely won't find a gas tank that you can't tell apart from NOS (there's minor differences), but from the tanks I've looked at, I'd have to say those crazy Canucks know what they're doing. :)

That's my Rock Valley tank in the picture posted... it was right around $650 with sending unit. No internal pump, but has 1/2" NPT bungs which I used with -10 (5/8") line. For $650 they should have used tape that took less time to remove. LOL. That stuff was STUCK on the tank!
The other nice thing about the tank is that because it doesn't "lose" all the space on the sides as with a factory pinch welded tank, it holds quite a bit. My tank holds just over 27 gallons, a good improvement over a factory tank.
I believe with an in-tank pump they're about $900 or so, but keep in mind the pumps they use (Walbro 255lph) do have HP limits. That's why I went external pump, I need 510 lbs/hr @ 58 psi of fuel flow at full boogie and the poor Walbro would have no chance of keeping up with that kind of demand.
Rick's Hot Rod shop is about the same price, and his stuff is just as nice if not nicer than Rock Valley's stuff-- he also offers super trick tanks with high-HP aeromotive pumps INSIDE. If his tanks were available at the time I bought my Rock Valley, I would have purchased one of his!
One thing to keep in mind, AFAIK Rock Valley now ships the tanks without the filler necks welded on because a very high percentage were being damaged in shipping. Be sure to factor in the cost/time of welding on the filler neck once it gets to you (you'll need a TIG.)

That would be gastanks.com
67 GTO May 11th, 05, 1:24 AM I *believe* these folks http://www.spectrapremium.com/ are the ones supplying Quanta. But I can't get one from them direct, even though they're less than 20 minutes away from me. I'd have to be a dealer or distributor. :clonk:

If you are looking for a good mass produced tank in the US, this is a good source. Price and quality of the tank is good. The straps and sending unit were higher than NPD.;)
airrj May 11th, 05, 4:30 PM Good discussion about gas tanks. Lets stay on point this time.
