well the motor is coming out to take care of a rod knock and a new issue involving the trans... I noticed one of the dampers in one of my vlave springs is broken. I have decided to put new springs, so i might as well go for a new cam to match new springs. Id like to get a little more out of my motor and a little more growl and choppiness (not too crazy!). Its my daily driver and it RARELY see's rpm's abouve 4K. So id like good power from idle to 4-5K

Current setup:

1970 402 with .040 overbore 410cid
702 closed chamber heads 92cc's(no port work)
10:1 SCR (if my math is exact)
current cam: Comp hyd XE262 (great on torque)
Performer RPM intake
Mallory HEI
Holley Street avenger 670 carb with vac secs.
1 5/8 headers with 2.5 exhaust (plus x pipe)
Carter electric fuel pump
Mech fan
3.08 rearend saginaw 4 speed

Id really like to nail this cam selection once and for all. And don't want to have to tear this motor apart again. So id want to get new lifters, springs, retainers, everything. Should i do anything to my heads? They are stock. If its not necisary to go larger valves, id rather not (or my pocket book would rather not).

I apperciate it guys

Choppy idle and a working range from idle to 4000 are pretty much mutually exclusive.

All i want is a nice cam for a daily driver that sounds good and has good power for my use.
I guess it can be 2-5k (i do have a 4 speed!).

What oneofakind67 said is true. A cam that "sounds" good will not perform well at lower RPM's. With 3.08 gears in a heavy car it will limit the choices. If you are really at 10-1 then you might be able to have your cake and eat it too. I would direct a post at UDharold,Grumpyvette or Mike(AKA wolfplace).

Interestingly, the trend today seems to be better idle quality rather than radical. But, that said, I have found that even a 278 on 114LSA cam will have a lope at idle if it is well advanced.

You can have a short duration cam ground on a tighter LSA. That will increase overlap, which is what give you the hot idle sound. A 268-272 on a 108 or 110 LSA should do the trick.

I just checked my 1998 Crane cat. and didn't find a stocked, BB cam on 106 centers so you might want to contact Delta and have them grind you up a custom cam on 106/106 centers that is about like a good old CC 270 Magnum cam.

Should be a dandy for you AND cackle nicely for that SOUND!!

Delta may even spec. a different cam to give you what you want if you ask them??

I didn't look in CC'c cat. only b/c their stocked cams are generally all 110/106 jobbers!

Or maybe an Isky 264 or 270 Mega cam both on 108 centers may do it for you??

I apperciate it guysI am extremely curious about your present cam and overall combo! Do you have any E.T.'s on your present set-up? You say it's great on torque?

P.M. me if you want to sell your old cam.

UDHarold, what do you think?
Im going to calculate my CR today sing the proper measuring tools, but i did it last time with a funky micrometer and it totaled out to 10.2:1.

I live near tacoma Wa, where Delta is located.. Call them with your specs and they will grind up a cam for you based on what you have existing. They are great to work with. If you supply them with a core the can grind you one up for around 100 bucks. Just give them all the info you have on your engine. ie. Carb, manifold, C/R , they have a huge database to go from. the will recommend something that will work best with what you have and what you want. http://www.deltacam.com/index.php

Isn`t the cam you have rated to 5k? The XE cams have a good following and the 268 should be just fine for a daily driver AND have a decent sound.

That said, I am unsure you will be happy going to another cam based on what you already have and your goals i.e. daily driver and under 5k powerband.

I just have a feeling i could be missing out on some untapped power by having my current cam, which is the xe 262 not xe268. Im just trying to get some ideas if there is a better cam for my application. I still plan on updating my gears to the 3.55 range so perhaps a new cam would be influenced my the new gears??
Im still relatively new to engine performance, that's why i am posting here. I want to be happy with my setup.
I know there are some cool sounding-mean machines around my town and would like to get the same. Im not at all unhappy with my current cam but i just think there is something more that i can obtain from my setup. If there isnt, Ill just keep the same cam. I was just going to do a whole new fresh rebuild and figured i would get a new cam also, something new to play with.
