how much will just the paint (primer,base-coat,clear-coat)cost for a 72 chevelle? how much paint does it take to cover a chevelle twice.

Well, I don't know about base coat/clear coat, but when I painted my 70 two summers ago here's the breakdown on single stage acrylic enamel with urethane hardener:
1 Gallon urethane primer 89.00
1 Pint catalyst 25.00
1 Gallon Acrylic enamel 109.00
1 Pint urethane hardener 30.00
1 Gallon reducer 18.00

I put three full coats of primer and three full coats of paint on the car. The best thing to do is talk to your local paint supply house and they'll have current prices and spec sheets for you. I had close to $1000 in paint including epoxy primer with hardener and thinner, primer-surfacer and thinner, base color with thinner, and clear coat with hardener and thinner. The hardeners are very expensive as is the base color, especially if you get a red or orange color.

I agree with Von. I just got done painting my 1965 Malibu. I used PPG all the way.
A gallon of DBU Base Coat was $200 alone. Good luck.

Depends on what you're gonna put on it. I spent $250 on primer, basecoat, clearcoat and all associated reducers, activators, etc... for my daily driver (PPG's Omni Line).

I also dropped $200 on just the primer and reducer for my Chevelle (PPG's Global Line).
