I have a 67 chevelle that I want to paint the bumpers the same color as the body. My question is, how do you remove the chrome from the bumpers? I know you can't just spray them with the plating still on it and expect it to last. I've read in several magazine's where the owner sanded the plating off. Has anyone done this and what type of materials did you use? Thanks for the help

The "correct" way is to have the chrome chemically stripped off by your plater, this leaves a copper coating that should be sanded and use a metal conversion coating from your paint manufacture and follow with self etch prime, blah, blah blah!I have sanded chrome bumpers down with 180 grit on a DA and primed and painted and it has lasted for years. So depending on your application make your choice.

The front bumper sees alot of abuse from stones, bugs & stuff, so prep & paint work has to be good. Wipe down with a pre-paint cleaner. Then laquer thinner. DA Sand with 180 then 220. Prime with a good urethane primer. (I've heard that you shouldn't use self etching primer on chrome)Then paint as usual. I've done this with good, long lasting results. You can weld the bumper bolts on the back side and grind the fronts off for a smotth look also. I used a glaze over the urethane primer for filling.
