Stood out in the carport last night at 11:30 putting the last coat of POR-15 on my gas tank! Went on very nice after I sprayed with the Metal Ready and looks great this morning. Now I need to paint it and was wondering if anyone had experience with painting Eastwoods grey over POR-15 or should I use POR-15's product called Metal Mask which they recommend for gas tanks? I want the original look but quality as well. Will I need to do anything to prepare the POR-15 on the tank if I go with Eastwoods or will it bond OK?
Need to know ASAP as Spring Carlisle is this weekend and I'm going to buy something there!!

Thanks

i would stay with the por line if thats what you started with because there products bond to each other especially if there paint matches the original color they say you could paint anything over it but if you use there stuff no prepis needed

Better read the directions that came with your POR15 paint. They used to have very detailed instructions about what you needed to do with topcoating. In the past, you either had to; flash coat before the POR dried fully or rough it up after it dried. Roughing it up is nearly impossible unless you own stock in sandpaper. They also sold a tie-coat type primer that would do a similar job. If you didn't do one of these steps, the top coat wouldn't stick, you could flake it off with your fingernail. Ask me how I learned that http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Some of their newer paints do not have this restriction anymore. So read the directions before you go any further...

Good luck!

I am starting the same project by POR15 my gas tank on my 66'. Did you do the degreasing step? If so what did you use?

Isnoey,

I talked to a sales rep at POR-15 before I bought their product and he recommended spraying the tank with their Metal Ready product for $12.95 and just a pint of the actual POR-15 for $21. It takes two coats and I still had some left over. I chose semi-gloss black and plan to paint over it with POR-15's gas tank paint. It really bonds to rust and my tank had some surface rust so I'm very happy with it. I plan to do the whole undercarriage and frame with it!

Good Luck

After all the money spent coating the inside of my tank with POR gas tank sealer (after prepping it with POR products) and POR15 on the top of the tank exterior, I should've just gone ahead and bought a new tank. This isn't according to recommendations but I painted the exterior of my tank, over POR15 and all, with Duplicolor Medium Charcoal Gray Metallic (rattle can). It's held up fine for 2 1/2 years and the color is about as close as you can get to a bare new tank.
