OK here is the problem Iam having my SS 396 is all original with 32000 miles on it . The only thing done to my car is 1 repaint to the body But now I have noticed that my rear main seal is leaking along with my intake gasket water and very little oil. I have to wipe it off every time I take the car to a show, Iam the second owner of this car and the engine has never been out of the car and the engine still has the original factory pain on it, some places its flaking off and its kind of dull looking. WHAT SHOULD I DO????
Do I just peplace the main seal and intake gasket? OR do I just pull the entire engine and repaint it!!????

Not sure what the rules are now in the survivour class.Use to be the original body paint. If not anymore wouldn't repaint engine. If ,would be whole lot easier to work on.Can freshin up the engine bay easier that way to.Have the original paint on mine but rebuilt the engine and painted.Going to paint car but that will be the same color code.Haven't been to many shows with survivior class, judges real strict in them.

I would at least attempt to replace the leaking components. Its not worth the hassle of dealing with leaks on 30+ years old gaskets IMO.

since the car has been repainted once, why not remove the motor, replace the rear main, all the gaskets, and repaint the motor.

Give a call to Island Musclecars in N.Y. Ask for Chris and he'll explain repainting the engine. We do all his motors on his resto's and have explicit instructions not to paint any engine we return to him. They have to be painted by him the same way the factory painted them. I've seen him do a couple and it's quite a task, but definitely looks "factory". This is for 100% "original" cars. His number is 631-842-0858. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

Complete gasket kit is cheaper than buying in pieces.Had some cracks in my intake under the carb. might want to check that.Have alot more miles on my 68 than yours.69 style intake would be easier to find than 68.Alittle harder if want date correct.Might want to check your exhaust manifolds mine needed resurfaced at the flanges.Had alittle bit of gap in them about 10,000ths,machine shop plainned them down even. But I'm anal and have more miles on mine than yours.Welcome to TC.Lewis 68 el camino ss396
