Timing first.

Timing will vary with RPM. I'd say to get the idle down first if it's running fast, set the initial timing, then go for the carb tuning.

Not only will timing vary with RPM, but idle RPM will also vary with timing.

This would be my order:

- Set initial timing to 10° BTDC to be able to start her
- Tune idle on carb
- Set total timing (disconnect distributor vac hose and plug port on carb, hook up timing light and rev her until mech advance maxes out (that's "total"), turn distributor until you have total timing at your desired value (36° seems to be a good value). Tighten dist clamp and hook up vacuum again.
- Tune idle again
- Tune carb

Hope this helps,

Olli
