: how to polish tail-light lenses?

Anyone with experience in polishing lenses to a new appearance? Though this isn't for my Chevelle, I have a new paint job on my daily-driver '92 Chevy pickup I am restoring that is making the taillight lenses, which are so opaque, faded, and old-appearing, stick out like a sore thumb. I'd hate to replace them just for appearance-sake, but would like advice on what to use to polish them to look new.

Wet sand until all nicks and scratches are gone, then polish and wax using regular car care products. My favorite is Micro-Mesh, it's a polishing system that comes with several different reusable wet sanding cloths. It's available from Micro Mark (http://www.micromark.com/) and other hobby suppliers. If the lenses are just a bit dull and you don't have any scratches, you can use the polish they sell for motorcycle helmet visors.

If they are turning opaque, you may have to sand them a bit before wet sanding and polishing. The Micro-Mesh system comes with coarser grits to take care of that. In some cases it's too deep down to sand off though. All depends on what shape they are in.

I'll tell you what, I bought a set of lenses for my 69 from a guy who polished them with only MOTHER's mag and aluminum polish. they look better than the NOS left lense I have new in the package. food for thought, plus its a great product for all your stainless etc. jason.

Didn't even know they had one  But I'm seriously tempted to buy a kit from Caswell (http://www.caswellplating.com/), the problem is that I don't know which one to choose... I have been drooling over all the cool stuff they have for quite a while now, but I guess I have to wait until I have a specific project to use it on.

Blue Magic works very well too. Polishes like that won't remove scratches or nicks though, but they are great to bring up the shine on dull parts.

I wiped mine down with 0000 steel wool and shot them with (rattle can) clear. They looked brand new.

Here is something else for the mix. I use a product called WEN-OL . It is pink and is in a tube like toothpaste. Made in Germany. I polished both sides of the SS plastic for my 70 dash. Now it looks like the plastic is removed and people want to touch it cauz it looks like no plastic is present. I also use it on all my stainless. It what I use and will not go to anything else. Yup, Wenol........used it on the lenses on my 96 Tahoe, they looked new. Works on the headlights, too.

What color tube, the red or the blue?

I've seen it before, but I can't remember where I can get it locally.

3M makes a cleaner and a polish for plastic lenses. It's really effective on these new-style headlights that get cloudy looking with age.
