do you have to bleed the power steering unit. i just recently put mine back in and now the wheel kinda kicks back at me when turning and makes a grinding type of noise. also the pump is out of my my 84 camaro but the pumps look exactly alike.
thanks

Yes and no. If that's the same type as in the older cars, it's kinda self bleeding. You have to put it on jacks and work it back and forth (stop to stop) several times. Check the fluid level after a couple of turns, but make sure you have the cap on while turning the wheel. Then start the engine and do the same thing again, but this time you need to be careful and turn it back immediately when it hits the stop. Someone told me this a long time ago, so this is the way I have always done it. I think the instructions for the last pump I bought said the same thing. I don't think you'll really hurt anything if you don't follow this procedure, but if you start the engine without bleeding the system, the pump will whip the fluid into a foam. This might explain the noise you're hearing. If you let it sit overnight to let the fluid settle and then bleed it, it should be fine.

As noted above, "bleeding" isn't exactly the right term, but you do need to get the air out. Stop-to-stop several times means 20 - 30 times based on the instructions when I did mine. Might be overkill, but what's a few extra minutes.

I think that's what I do too. Even if it might not be neccessary to do it that many times, it doesn't cost any more to make sure it's done right. I think read somewhere that you should do it until you can't hear that "bubbling" or "crunching" noise from the bubbles in the system anymore, and the fluid in the reservoir looks clear.
