Hiya guys,
Getting ready to fire up a 383 this weekend ( cam break in etc )....
I know that I need to get it to TDC before I stab the distributor, but, I've heard that I need to turn the balancer to 8 degrees BTDC then install it.....

I don't think it will....we just dropped the HEI in mine and it was 8 btdc when we did it. Just make sure the rotor is at the 5 o clock position.

You can install it straight up, and then adjust the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged on the carb side.

when we put our distributor in at first we had it 180 out, it was at tdc and after dropping int he rotor was pointing to the #1 point, but it was on the wrong stroke. simply getting it to tdc again and putting it back in allowed her to fire right up :)

You can use a timing light to static set the initial timing. Do a search on my user name.
