I gotta turbo-400 behind a 396 in a 68 coupe, It wont go into 3rd!! One test i did is I dove it like a manual, i cruise in 1st, bump it into 2nd, then when i try to put it into 3rd the next gear is neutral,
Anyone have any ideas? I do not wanna bring it to a shop, i want to do everything i can to fix it, Anyone heard of this before?
Any input will be great
Thanks,
Rick

It sounds like your linkage might be moving the transmission into nuetral right from second and bypassing third. Something in your shift linkage might need corrected.

The shift cable is out of a 70 monte carlo, or at least i think it was a 70, does that interchange?
I'll check out the geometry

If it used to work with your shifter, etc, you may have a set of wiped out direct clutches.
Wiped clutches feel just like a neutral, although IME there is usually a (brief) period where you feel them slipping before they become a true neutral.
Could also be a blown seal, valvebody problem, etc. If you can eliminate the shifter you may want to put a pressure guage on it, then pull it out.
